This is a great place to see some great pieces. Spend time with the family, learn some, and even some activities such as scavenge hunt, sketching and more.Art work includes many paintings, some great hand crafted furniture, many other display items, and several other exhibits.Admission fee is reasonable, $10, kids under 12 are free. plus discounts for students and others.I really enjoyed my first. Wish I could have stayed longer. I will need to plan a return visit.

We really enjoyed this sweet little museum. There is a nice exhibit of their permanent collections (I assume part of it). And, because the whaling ship, The Morgan is soon to set sail, they had a really good exhibit on the ship, whaling and its place in our economy in its heyday. I really learned a lot. There was another exhibit about the Chinese workers at the local casino that didn't seem to fit, was way too much to look at, but was interesting nonetheless.

This is a really cool little art museum. It is easy to get to. The building and grounds are beautiful. The downstairs is great, full of fine early American art. The upstairs is nice, but has very little art work. Entrance fee was $10. A little steep for half of a small museum.

This is a small town art museum so don't expect the Met, Chicago or DIA type of collect. However, they have a very good collection of early American Art and some nice stuff from the "Hudson River" School. The first floor is easily done in 30 minutes (1 hour if you like to linger and study art like we do). The second floor is devoted to modern and contemporary art and special exhibits (Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup cans for example). This isn't our cup of tea, but if you like that sort of stuff you probably would appreciate the extent of their collection, especially the Tiger Fish sculptures that were exhibited during our visit. Would we go again - probably not unless they had a special exhibit of interest.

My family has enjoyed the Lyman for a few years now. My son participated in their homeschool classes for three years and their summer camps for two summers. Love the revolving exhibits. If you live in the area, a membership is well worth the cost. The grounds are relaxing and the hill is a favorite local sledding spot. The museum is next door to Connecticut College which has its own galleries located in Cummings and in the library.

The permanent art is very good but there is not a lot of it. There were two other time limited exhibits which were more interesting. One covered the War of 1812, one most americans are not knowledgeable about, and the other was the art of James Gurney, the orginator of Dinotopia, a lost world. This exhibit was the hit among most of visiting that day and it also was about an artist with whom we had no familiarity. He dreamed up this lost world where humans and dinosaurs live together and his artwork was spectacular.

Second time there. Friendly, accessible. Not precious. Good exhibits, whatever they have. We saw Broadway musicals--their costumes, stage design, etc. And, we got to see videos of parts of the musicals. Last time: saw exhibit by a wonderful local artist. On the campus of CT College, north of New London. Across the street is the college arboretum. Worth a walk

Featured exhibits change. They have CT Impressionist Paintings but are not always on display.

We enjoyed are recent visit to Lyman Allyn. The staff was wonderfully helpful. The permanent collection is smallish with a focus on Hudson Valley school and American Impressionist plus several portraits of the great and good of New London. The entire family enjoyed the recent skateboard and manga exhibit. It pushed the question of what is art, and can skateboards be art?

the lyman allyn art museum in new london connecticut is a real gem. located across the street from the us coast guard academy and near the campus of connecticut college it houses an impressive collection. the current show is about a famous connecticut native, the nut lady. her entire nut collection is on display, along with her television appearances on johnny carson and more. her artist ability ranks among the best of the comtempory artists of the seventies, as are her stilllifes from the fifties. this is an interesting story that should be viewed by anyone who appreciates the somewhat quirky but fun world of collecting and making art.
