Our group of 4 didn't know what to expect when we scheduled an appointment with Millie, the Society's curator but glad we did. You have to make an appointment since there are no standard hours. We spent over 2 hours listening to Millie while going through the old Solomon Rockwell House which is fully furnished with the original contents from many different inhabitants over 200 years. Millie is a fountain of information about the history of Winsted, the surrounding area and of course the house and Millie has dedicated herself to preserving all the contents of the house ranging from clothing, portraits, furniture, and period pieces. There's even an amazing room Millie converted about the local soldiers of the Civil War period with their stories, weapons, and photos. And, the house is haunted; don't forget to ask Millie about her experiences! The only thing we didn't ask and find out about was why it's named after Wincester rather than Winsted which is it's location.
Wonderful collection of artifacts housed in a beautiful old building set above main street. This is a must visit stop in any travels through Wincester!
The Winchester historical society is one of Connecticut's best kept secrets! In addition Winsted has the Soldiers Monument which is also part of the town seal. Combine a historical trip with a shopping experience at the artist enclave of Whiting Mills. Top it off with a dinner at one of the great restaurants.
