After watching a documentary about General Douglas MacArthur and hearing he was laid to rest in Norfolk, we decided to go see the MacArthur Memorial. It is easy to find. Exit 10 off of 264, 3 blocks on the left across from parking at MacArthur Mall. Parking ticket can be validated at the Visitor Center for 3 hours of free parking. There is no charge to visit the MacArthur Memorial, which consists of three buildings.Full of history and exhibits. My three grandchildren (ages 17, 13 and 13) enjoyed it. There is a 27 minute film that helps set the stage for the exhibits. We talked about the heroism of General MacArthur and the controversy at conclusion of his military career. The whole place is top notch, well done. Don't pass it by.
Great free museum. If you love history you will love this museum! A lot to see, many personal belongings, vehicles and papers.
This museum provides a movie on the General's life/career as well as interpretative displays on his activities in WWI, WWII, and Korea. It can be seen in a fairly short time (hour or two) and is particularly great for children in junior high/highschool who are studying this aspect of U.S. history. Also, they recognize veterans there which I thought was a class act.
I was born in MacArthur's hometown, traced his steps in the Philippines, and now reside in the town where he retired. It's wonderful to see such a fabulous memorial to the man, as well as a fitting final resting place for him and his wife. Make sure you visit all the buildings in the memorial!
This place is one of the best museums I have seen on one person. The life and times of General Macarthur are a very interesting history lesson! I went by my self and still had a great day! My favorite part was why he left the service and his life more towards the end of it. Go check it out to find out what I am talking about.
There is so much history and information presented about General Douglas MacArthur and the world events which shaped him as well as those he shaped. More than just a collection of posters and facts, it was neat seeing various uniforms, medals, letters and replicas of artifacts. Whether you agree with MacArthur's style or philosophy towards war and leadership, you come away impressed with the many diverse facets of his life and career, not just with his military accomplishments.
Had a great visit yesterday to the MacArthur Memorial. It is a free museum in downtown Norfolk and worth the short walk from the shopping center. .
Dragged kicking and screaming, on the inside, by my husband the history buff on a work-related mission, I thoroughly enjoyed learning about General Douglas MacArthur and his legacy at the memorial. Additionally, there is a wonderful exhibit on the 42nd Rainbow Division currently on display in the accompanying building where you can also enjoy an informative film on the life and military career of General MacArthur. Really well done, interesting, and free!
If you want to know more about Douglas MacArthur than "Duty, Honor, Country," I recommend you spend a couple of hours at the MacArthur Memorial. Obviously, it is very focused on a single individual, but he did have a long and distinguished career in the US Army. I was fortunate enough to tour the memorial with a group, so I had a tour guide who helped fill in some of the background.
Great museum and memorial of one of America’s greatest generals. If you do not know the history of GEN MacArthur, the museum does a good job of chronicling his professional life (there is a bit on his parents history, not much between graduating West Point and becoming a Brigade Commander). Take the time to walk through the museum, there are some good and unique pieces (ie. the pen he used to sign Japan’s surrender in WWII).
I learned quite a bit by my visit to this museum. I was traveling with history buffs who were very familiar with MacArthur but I was not as knowledgable. The museum is a wonderful tribute to the man who believed in duty, honor and country. The gift shop offered many books to purchase as well as other items.
There's much to learn in this museum about MacArthur and the first and second World Wars. MacArthur was a brilliant soldier and a controversial one. He emphasized "duty, honor, and country". Worth the visit.
We arrived at 4:45 --- 15 minutes before closing time. Impressive museum, Plenty to see just not enough time
the statue is located in the centre of downtown, parking can be a problem it is an average statue nothing special, a few minutes to view it is all you need, large shopping centre is located across the street
Nordstrom is a diverse and delightful store with great men's and women's clothing. I am not usually a mall shopper but the variety of retailers is excellent. It is conveniently located within walking distance of the Marriott and Waterside attractions.
