Just two stops from Reagan airport, Old Town is a great place to stay or visit when coming to the area. Wear comfortable shoes as the streets are brick and very challenging to walk on in any shoes without rubber soles. There are many blocks of shopping with main street America stores as well as local gems. Also many cute restaurants to choose from. Take the free trolley from the Metro and listen to the history and attractions for each stop. You can get on and off as often as you like.
Loved the historic architecture, location, charming atmosphere, free trolly, diversity of quaint restaurants, shopping and riverfront.
I'm a tough critic so don't let my three rating sway you. I just can't quite give it a four. I stayed at the Embassy Suites which is right at the head of King Street in Old Town. Old Town is full of history, culture and some nice restaurants and only 7 minutes from Reagan National. I certainly would not call it the hub of nightlife but it has plenty to offer in restaurants and pubs. Since it is directly available along the Metro it is worth a stop if spending any significant time in DC.
I live in old town and find it the best for walkability, metro access ,tons of great restaurants, bars, the river for water activities, ferry to nats park--- you name it old town probably has it
If you are planing a trip to DC, I suggest you consider staying in Old Town Alexandria. The hotels here are much more reasonable than in DC. The metro stops at the top of King Street which is the center of Old Town Alexandria. If your experience is anything like ours, you may see less of DC and a lot of Old Town because there is so much to do ( ie: museums, unique shops< clothes, antiques, furniture, gifts, etc>. historic homes, ghost tours, art galleries, awesome restaurants of all kinds and prices, a waterfront with boat trips to places of interest on the Potomac, a place to relax and feed the birds, and a free trolley that moves you from the waterfront to the Metro & Amtrak station)My husband and I discovered Old Town a few years ago and have returned many times for 3-4 days get-a-ways. While we usually drive from suburban Philadelphia to Alexandria, I recently took Amtrak to Old Town for a reunion with "the girls." Amtrak is so easy and I avoided paying for parking a car that I wouldn't need to get around. ( hotel parking fees can take a bite out of your budget)
Holy mole did I not expect this town to be one my favorite little towns when I visited! My flight was cancelled in the late afternoon, and was grounded in Alexandria for the night. But I'm not one to stay confined in my hotel during a lovely evening, so I ventured out and decided to walk up and down King Street. And I was not disappointed! It was snowing quite a bit, so the streets to moderately quiet, but even in that weather there were still some folks out and about. I'm also a 22-year-old girl, and felt completely safe and secure walking around by myself. Just sayin' to let you know how safe this part of town truly is!King street itself was gorgeous; it's completely worth a visit just to stroll up and down and look into the store fronts. The river was beautiful, the restaurants were astounding, and I definitely enjoyed my share of oysters in a few of the restaurants on the street!I was only there for less than a day, but it was absolutely lovely, and I can't wait to visit this area again and show off old town!
Old town is a very charming and beautiful place that's filled with history. Lots of really great authentic restaurants and shops along king street. I wanted to stay in DC but im glad I stayed here because it wasn't crowded with people and you never get bored of walking around Alexandria.
Old Town is absolutely one of my favorite places in the DC area. It has interesting shops of all kinds, historic sites, street performers, and free events. I could spend all afternoon at the Torpedo factory looking at the galleries or watching the artists work. The best part is the food! Tons of variety - from affordable hole in the wall places to truly fine dining - and everything is good!
I live in Old Town for part of the year. It is a fabulous place for residents as well as tourists. Great restaurants, and tours.
We lived within walking distance of Old Town Alexandria and it is still one our favorite.p destinations. The restaurants a wonderful and there is. An interesting variety of choices. It is a lovely neighborhood with a beautiful waterfront, great shopping and it is just funto walk around. Now there is the added attraction of a water attraction to National Harbor and all that has to offer for the whole family.
