Arlington is a sobering experience. I first visited as a 5th grader. I visited next as a former Army Officer, and parent of a 5th and 3rd grader. Solemn. Awe-inspiring. Sobering to think of all the young patriots who died so that we might live free. Worthy of a visit if you are in Washington.
My daughter and I walked around Arlington twice. We both were moved by the graves of the soldiers children who died young. Noticed that there were a lot that died from 1 day to less than a year old in the 50s. We had trouble locating graves that were marked civilian and unknown until we stumbled across them. This was very moving because they are so little visited. After doing some research I discovered that they were from the civil war era.
If in Washington, DC, this is a "MUST". It is a sober, moving place. The memorials to John F Kennedy and family is very moving; what a view from their resting place. It was an amazing experience just to walk the grounds. Take your time.
Including JFK. Beautiful grounds, meticulously maintained, with headstones of Jews and Christions alike, perfectly aligned in one last military salute. You can't help but tear up as you walk these hallowed grounds.
It is one of the most solemn, tranquil and powerful places to visit in DC. I enjoy visiting as it is both beautiful and so powerful seeing the sacrifice of so many Americans for so long. The Cemetery has graves from the Civil War to the present. You can easily walk to see the highlights but the tram will allow you to see much more. A good thing to do is take the tram uphill to most of the sites all the way to Arlington House. After visiting the house and taking in the view you can walk down and spend time more leisurely on your return, including the JFK flame. Do not miss the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown soldier another must see on a visit here.
Was nice, sobering to see the numbers of graves. For a non US citizen questioning America's constant participation in conflict in other parts of the world I didn't buy into the strongly patriotic and emotional message and symbolism of it all, but I saw a number of young American kids swallowing back tears so I guess the experience is very different for Americans.
Visiting Arlington was surprisingly enjoyable. Even though a solemn experience, very cool and full of pride as well. The changing of the guard was just amazing. I will never forget.
