Stayed here for 4 nights. Nice park relaxing listening to the spring waters. The room we stayed in could have used improvement though. We had a double room with 3 full size beds but there is no table to put your stuff on and if you are told it had a kitchenette well that consists of a microwave and a mini fridge. The walls keep noise down from the outside but the walls on the inside are another story! A family checked in at 2 am and we could hear everything! Children yelling and parents having no respect for the other visitors. They did not settle down till 4am!
If you are visiting the park to enjoy the ammenities, specifically the spring fed pool, it is a great place to visit. If you are just camping, it is a little pricey. As another reviewer has stated, the sites are inexpensive, but the $7.00 daily fee/per person adds $14.00 a night per person to the site price. Bath/shower facilities are clean and the campground sites are roomy. Although it was winter during our visit, the picnic areas of the campgrounds needed some weed triming. Overall, the landscape maintenance was not as nice as other Texas state parks we have visited, even for the dormant season. We were traveling through but decided to only stay one night in our travel trailer. Would be a fun place to spend time during warmer months, particularly with kids.
I read about the 'world's largest hot spring fed swimming pool in the world' and had to test it out for myself! Weather was really hot 3 days and really cool the other 2. But I took advantage of the hot springs every day! It was a nice 76 degrees the first 3 days and 74 the next 2. We snorkeled the pool for hours! A couple of scuba divers were there the first couple of days. Was neat to watch them. The little fish swam right up to my mask and looked me in the eyes! So cool! There is a low and high dive board. And lots of room to swim laps. We camped out in a 5th wheel and enjoyed it. Sort of odd the way they have you 'pull in' to your site, but I got use to it quickly. They only have one dump station, so remember that. Also, only had a few 50 amp service, I believe they are upgrading the rest to 50amp in the near future. Call before you go. It got down to below freezing 3 nights, was cool to wake up to a slight frost on the ground! The water 'creek' circling throughout the park was a beautiful plus! We took the dogs walking and just had a great time! Several little bridges crossed over the water. You are 4.5 miles away from the closest little town and it has only 2 gas stations and 3 places to eat. Load up on essentials before you go. State Park office doesn't have food, to be expected. Ice cream I think is all they sell. Very inexpensive, but you must pay $7 daily use fee on top of camping/accommodation fees. If you are 100% DAV and have documentation, you can get a free Texas State Park pass for free entry. This is a must see place if you like unique adventures!
If I'm ever within 2 hrs drive from here, this is where I'm staying!Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!Stayed here with friends on way to Guadalupe Mountain NP. Bring the goggles/snokel/scuba because it's worth it!Water stays just cool enough, but not hot, some steam off the creek at night. Coyotes in the distance, stars everywhere. Cabins are a great value. It's about 10min off the interstate, so don't know why there aren't more visitors (maybe it's busy in the summer?) I think you can buy pretty much whatever you need: goggles, towels, food, sunscreen, but not too sure.
Who cares how far the drive is? Your creating memories with your kids. We camped here...twice. Kids don't mind the chilly water. Picnic by the pool. Feed the catfish bread, lunchmeat, tortillas from your hand. Enjoy the unspoiled wide open scenery. Sleep in a tent, make smores over the fire..listen to coyotes yipping in the dark desert. Take snorkel masks. Sunscreen is prohibited for the ecosystem so a white tshirt and limiting exposure is important. You make it this far....enjoy Ft Davis and McDonald observatory. Good memories!
What a great place. Camp sites are inexpensive $11/$14/$17. Park entrance is $7 each. they have a large day park area for picnic and get together..Dive into the crystal-clear water of the world’s largest spring-fed swimming pool. Swim, scuba dive, or just relax under the trees at this historic park in arid West Texas.
This place is great! The water is always about 74 degrees or something like that. HUGE nature pool - with some fish!. People scuba dive there - pretty much just sit on the bottom deep part for hours getting certified - I'd forget they were there ! I snorkeled - there are some huge purplish/bluish catfish - don't be creeped out though. High diving boards too. So different because no life guards. The water is perfectly clear. "hotel" rooms are very simple and older - nothing fancy at all - remember it is a state park. But it has water flowing through coming from springs from pool. Go there! There are not a lot of places to stay in the area any way - so it's nice just to use it as a hotel if you want. Could swim in winter, too, because water will be likely warmer than air. People do.
I was en route to Fort Davis and had to stop at the famous spring fed pool at Balmorhea. The pool is huge - a great get-away spot in West Texas. The cienega was teeming with wildlife. A couple turtle species, several fish and birds. The camping sites looked okay, nothing extraordinary. Close together and not well-shaded but functional. I have no information to offer regarding the motel on-site. There are no hiking trails; the attraction for this park is solely the pool. Overall it's a decent park if you're looking for some CCC history in the pool.
Let's face it. The sole reason you're visiting Balmorhea is for the swimming hole. The campground we were given was depressing. Very little shade, in the middle of nowhere, and the fire pit was full of trash. Camping here was not a fun experience. The spring-fed swimming pool, on the other hand, was fantastic. Hundreds, if not thousands, of tiny fish call the pool home, but they are totally harmless. Much of the pool is 20-25 feet deep, which is awesome for exploring with goggles or scuba gear. Repeatedy jumping off the high dive into the well-temperatured water was a whole lot of fun. In one end, the pool soaks up the sun and ascends to only about 3 feet deep; a great spot to relax while keeping cool. Beware the very slippery mossy pool floor.Plan on bringing materials for campsite cooking; charcoal, fluid, and food. We chose to drive 40 minutes to a nice little deli in Fort Davis for lunch and over an hour to Van Horn for dinner.Make a day out of visiting this park, but no more than that. Unless you booked one of their cabins, which I cannot comment on.
My grandkids & I did a SHE: swimming holes expedition! We swam at all the top ranked swimming spots of Texas & this was ranked #1. We didn't rank it #1. The water wasn't clear at all but the area was beautiful & the swimming was good! At all the pools that we swam this summer, the spring fed pools were all 68 degrees. The temp here was a good 74-76! The day wasn't hot, low 70s! So a big draw here is the temperature! Lots of tables, grass, & cabins so truly a great family hangout!
This is an absolute gem... wonderfully clean natural pool for swimming that maintains a near-constant temperature year round. Love the setting and large pool/deck areas for relaxing. We keep returning whenever we're in the area and heartily recommend it.
I've been visiting this park with my family for the past 15-20 years and loved it every time. The pool is the main attraction with 2 diving boards, a shallow side for children and ample room to set up camp for the day. The deep end of the pool is about 25 feet p and crystal clear. We stay in the small hotel on the property. The entire motel is surrounded by a small creek filed with crayfish, catfish, frogs and tons of s akes. The creek empties into a area over looked by an observation deck where you can feed and admire all kinds of wildlife.Behind the motel and marsh area there are many tent/RV sites walking distance from the pool.Make motel reservations early (like months).
We were staying in Fort Davis and went over to check this place out. Worth the trip! Very nice spring fed pool. We were there on Labor Day weekend and the place was not that crowded. There were lots of folks there but the pool is giant. Trees appeared out of the desert as we approached and the water was splendidly cool. I would recommend this place if you are near or passing by on I 10
Pros: not crowded, family friendlyCons: Cant re-enter the park after leaving without possibilty of a wait, rattlesnakes
If you enjoy swimming, it doesn't get better than clear, clean, cool spring water. We camped in our popup trailer, and the campground was pleasant enough. I agree with other reviewers that the showers are way below standard. I know that state parks are always hurting economically, but Texas State Parks charge people a "Day Use Fee" in addition to a camping fee - even charging the Day Use Fee to those folks who pull in at night and out in the morning (we heard plenty about that on the road). Those fees should be put to use where needed, i.e. fix and clean those shower stalls and honor this beautiful oasis in Texas.
