Wow, it is a very interesting place to spend an afternoon. They have wind mills from early days, foreign countries and present. They tell the story of how wind power has been utilized in all facets of our society. Went expecting too spend maybe an hour and stayed for three. Great place to take a family visit. You want be disappointed!
Get out there. You won't believe the scope of this place. Windmills of every shape and size really give you a sense of the history of the plains.
A must-see attraction in Lubbock, Texas. This is the only museum of its kind in the world. EVERYTHING you could ever want to know about windmills is evident in this museum. You have never seen so many windmills in one place, and they are all different!! I have been here more than once and learn something new every time. At only $5.00 per person (or $10 for a family of four), the price is right! There are displays inside, and outside. Hint: Make sure you go into the banquet room to see the mural. It is absolutely breathtaking!
The only out of state place we've visited where we can walk in and say we're from Batavia Illinois, instead of 'Chicago' and the curators know what we mean. In the late 1800's there were three major windmill manufacturers in Batavia. It was fun seeing their place in history in Texas, where many fine examples of these are erected at this museum. It is an indoor-outdoor museum with windmills of every kind imaginable, with good interpretive plaques on most windmills, and every aspect of windmill use, all parts. Very easy to get to in Lubbock.
The number and variety of windmills expands often so repeat visits are a must. There is no other museum like this in the United States, for sure. And the grant mural tracing the history of the windmill is not to be missed.
There is a Christmas display of train villages which your children will love to look at while the adults enjoy the history of windmills. There are hundreds of windmills there, even one used to power a radio!
there are all kinds of wind turbines and windmills and all kinds and shapes of wind energy devices spanning decades. they even have full size wind turbines that can be kind of scary to little kids - mine were but they figured out it was safe. its a great place to take pics and just off of Mackenzie park - so easy to get to. There is plenty of parking, it is usually not crowded and not usually a busy place. it is off the beaten path. Still a great place to visit and very interesting.
The American Wind Power Center has become internationally recognized as the place to visit for observing windmills in their natural setting. It also serves as a premier educational facility where the windmill’s heritage is taught, seen and heard. I grew up on the Texas Plains where is it's common to see windmills, but windmills can hold a fascination for people from outside this region.Complementing the many windmills is a large collection of photographs, drawings and models in the Windmiller’s Art Gallery along with other very rare collections of windmill artifacts. There is a display room specially built for a large collection of windmill weights.Texas boasts the largest wind energy generation capacity in the US, so it's only fitting that you can walk right up to one of these fully functional wind turbines. It's a site to see!If you're interested in a unique variety of windmill related keepsakes, visit the museum store that is located inside the building.
Not a Smithsonian, but it is a beautiful location and emphasizes the resourcefulness of early pioneers and determination to subdue the land.
Hardly do you see a museum dedicated to windmills. This is a very interesting and unique museum - not a big one, took us about an hour to go through. Outside, it has a collection of all sorts of working windmills from all eras. Inside, it has more rare and restored windmills. Overall, it's education and pleasant to visit!
I've had this museum on my list for awhile and I'm glad I finally was able to visit. The main building contains over 100 fully restored American windmills of all types and models. A newly built, adjoining room displays an outstanding mural covering two walls which illustrates the history of American windmills. I also enjoyed the many functioning windmills outside, especially the full size reproduction of the 1621 Flowerdew Hundred Post Mill. A very interesting and educational museum.
You will learn a great deal about windmills here. You will learn even if you think you already know about windmills. An easy and pleasant place to visit.
Fun and interesting. Never knew there were that many types of windmills. We actually had our family reunion here and it was perfect. Plenty of room and entertaining. We had over 50 people in attendance and I think almost everyone walked through the museum. Nice location. Kid friendly.
We stopped in out of curiosity and so glad we did. We learned more than we ever thought possible. Be sure to walk outside and see the wall painting. If someone is near by, be sure to ask them the history of the wall painting. It's absolutely beautiful.
All the different types of windmills was amazing. It was a great display and the painting on the wall was really something to see. Be sure to walk around outside as well as in.
