We enjoyed all our activities in The Palisades Interstate Park. It is a picturesque park for outdoor activities. We walked a few trails but we did not do the Giant Stairs yet (hopefully next time!). The Lookout Inn is accessible from Palisades Interstate Parkway and it is a good starting point for a few routes.

If you go here! You must do Giant stairs Hike ! It takes about 3 hours (Four Miles). Take a lot of water. I assume during rainy season some parts of the trail could be flooded. But, it's different & very enjoyable.

We came here today again with the pup and it was beautiful!! It was snowing but that didn't bother us. The trails were clear, nobody else was on the trail with us so our dog was able to be off leash. The trail markers were easily seen and lots of photo opportunities. Unfortunately, there was heavy fog/clouds so we couldn't clearly see the NY side. Getting down to the base of the mountain was easy. They had steps for you. We then ran into the large rocks where we had to scramble. We weren't sure if we were at the right place but we went up the mountain. We got about half way and decided to turn back. Only reason was because it was still snowing, our dog was having some difficulty, and we didn't know how long we would have to scramble for. Next time, we'll go without the dog and when it's not snowing and once I know what to expect, we can do it again. I even got a chance to test out both GPS tracking softwareL MapMyHike and MyTracks. I'm not sure what happened but MyTracks was more accurate. It seemed like MapMyHike lost GPS tracking for awhile. I'll just have to double check next time instead of letting the software run on its own.MyTracks Hike:https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0Vvnvsyv9LReF9ZMmZ4Y01hVWc/edit?usp=drivesdkPhotos:http://imag3l.com/?p=1319I'd definitely come here again. This is a great place for wild life and Fall photography!

This stopping point off Exit 3 northbound on the Palisades Interstate Parkway leads into a large parking area where you can get out and walk several yards to a lookout area that gives a great view over the Hudson River, and views across to the town of Hastings-on-Hudson and further south to Yonkers. There's not a view of Manhattan due to the angle. This lookout area is a frequent meeting location for nature lectures, especially for bird-lovers. This location is between the George Washington Bridge to the south and the Tappan Zee Bridge to the north (a bit closer to Tappan Zee than GWB).There are picnic grounds available for several groups. The Lookout Inn is a small place offering some basic food and drink items for breakfast and lunch (burgers, hot dogs, and the like), and it has restrooms. My favorite part about State Line Lookout is that it's my starting point to get onto the hiking trails within the Palisades Interstate Park. The trail I usually hike (can't remember which "color-coded" trail it is designated) goes out from the road through a forested area and close to the cliffs edge where you get another awesome view above the Hudson River. Very dangerous though, there's no guardrail or fence to keep you from going over the very high cliffs. From there, the trail works its way down to the river bank. It's relatively steep in some places, and if you're not in great shape, you'll have to take a few rest breaks before you get to the river. At the river edge, there's a modest waterfall over cliffs made of black stone. I usually return back at this point. But if you continue on the trail south along the river, it leads to what's known as the "Giant Stairs", a strenuous hike across huge rocks and boulders along the shore, sometimes level, sometimes steep. I've only done the Giant Stairs loop trail once; it was very difficult on my knees to maneuver over the rocks, and it was difficult for me to maintain my balance in many places. If you continue on the trail, it gradually goes upwards and eventually back to the State Line Lookout.

This is a very nice stop along the Palisades Interstate Parkway. Coming from the south there are a couple of nice minor lookout points that are clearly marked shortly before their exit ramps. If you are going this way take a few minutes to appreciate the view from these points, especially the one a bit past exit 1 which offers a beautiful view of the Henry Hudson Bridge in the Bronx to the east and the George Washington Bridge & Manhattan in the distance to the south. The State Line Lookout itself offers exceptional views of the Hudson River. Part of The Tappan Zee Bridge can be seen in the distance to the north. A great part of the site is a gift shop and café structure. The gift shop is a counter and shelf set-up with many books about New Jersey and New York and some post cards and other souvenirs. I did not have time to eat at the café, but the aromas were wonderful and the menu appeared to be extensive, including burgers, hotdogs, chicken fingers, and dozens of other items you might desire during a highway stop. Some seating was available inside and outside. Bathroom facilities were present in the structure as well portable facilities outside. I have heard that the 25 mph speed limit on the exit ramp is sometimes strictly enforced. Parking is free.

The views are breathtaking , eat in a historical building . It have a camp cabin feel and the food is better now than in past years . We like to stop here on the way north for a quick bite and overlook the river . Even better when we have our folding bikes along . If you ride the Palisades make sure to stop in . You can go on to Bear Mountain Park or take route 6 to Woodbury Commons outlets or route 9 to Fishkil Pougkeepsie area . Much nicer ride than the highway .

We stopped at the State Line Lookout on our way from New England to our home outside Philadelphia, and it really is worth going a bit out of your way for. If you usually travel on Rt. 95, or the Garden State Parkway, or Rt. 287, through or around New York, you can take the Palisades Parkway and enjoy a lot more scenery without losing much, if any, time. And the Lookout is a cozy, charming, throw-back of a place, where you can stand on top of the cliffs and get breath-taking views. Definitely a cut above your average highway rest area!

What began as a refreshment stand 532 ft above sea level in 1937 is now a great "base camp". The Lookout Inn and the State Line Lookout caters to varrying interests, ages and activities. Seniors come to spend a relaxed snack in the sun. If you want to stretch and go for a brisk walk, the old route 9W is the stretch you are looking for. More active folks can try out the trails - the easy ones, the "more difficult" ones or the "most difficult" one. While you are on these trails you may choose to include the Women's Federation Monument if you have an interest in history. If you are nature buff there are reasons to go back each season. The boards around the place say that in spring you will see the Great Blue Heron, Canada Geese, three types of Swallows, and Rock doves. In summer you get Double-crested Cormorants, Tiger Swallowtail butterflies, Turkey Vultures, and Red-tailed Hawks. Besides the fall colors autumn brings Sharp-shined Hawks, Ospreys, Broad-winged Hawks, and Monarch butterflies. In winter you can see Canvasback Ducks, Common Goldeneye Ducks, Bald Eagles, Great Black-backed Gulls.Country skiing is winter sport that this Inn may serve as the base camp for. What ever be the season or day of the week you can go in and order food year-around between 9:30 and 5. You get an extra hour on weekends between October to March. It is nice and cool/cozy inside the Inn with friendly staff. You can also buy knick knacks or books on the history or flora/fauna of the region. The parking lot outside is quite spacious and price is just right - free.So if you bring your own refreshments you can entertain your kids with a lot of fun and frolic for free. And if you browse meetup.com you will find that people do use this place as a venue for meet-ups. So there you have it. A venue that will refresh you as it was meant to when it started off decades ago.

Travel north of the George Washington Bridge on the Palisades Interstate Parkway and you will be treated to lookouts that give you a great view of the Hudson River. The best place to stop is State Line Lookout which is close to the New Jersey border. The have lookout views that are best. They sort of protrude from the cliffs and make great photo opportunities. There is a restaurant, Lookout Inn, that is not more than a hamburger and potato chip place. What is more interesting is the many unusual books they sell about the history of the area.If you are a local, State Line Lookout is a great place to spend an afternoon in the summer. Bring along your own chairs (although they have picnic benches) and enjoy the always-present breeze on a hot summer day.
