The Tourne is a great place to go for a hike, with or without your dog. If you are just feeling up to a nice walk through the woods, or a more intense hike, the Tourne has what you need.
Great park to picnic or hike around. Lots of trails. Top of the Tourne has great views of NYC Skyline on a clear day.
One of my favorite places to grill. Quiet. You have the choice of grills by the baseball field/parking lot. Or for a more secluded experience, grills in the woods. There's also a larger, group picnic area with multiple grills. A five minute hike will get you to some nice scenery.
I have hiked, walked, run, and bikes all the trails here. Brought family too. You will like the small ascent to the top with nice views. Clear days you can see all the way to NYC. Dog friendly. In winter-great for sledding.
Came in April when the spring flowers were just coming up and visited only the wildflower garden area. Visit was part of a tour sponsored by the Arboretum in Morristown. It is always great to find these gems right around the corner from where one lives.
Tourne Park has a number of hiking trails that are pretty well marked. They are short, all under 4 miles. The yellow trail, which I took, goes up and down a small hill with a nice view at the top. The path is a pebble road with lots of shade and places to sit along the way. 1.2 mile circle around a hill to the top and down again. Nice foliage, trees and ferns throughout.
Until a recent injury during all four seasons I would bring my dog for a daily hike to the "Top of the Tourne". No matter the timbering year it's a peaceful and serene hike that is considered to be a moderate hike for beginners. I have hiked the "loop" which is about 40 minutes in length and has several scenic spots particularly the overlook! The many people my dog and I have encountered are super friendly -. including other dogs! This is a truly a piece of heaven as it has several natural benches along the path and particularly pleasant before 8 in the morning on weekends! I highly recommend visiting this park. It has several different trails that are clearly marked and follow the key on the map! There is a place to picnic, grills, a beach! This is a clean and friendly park that is literally in my own back yard!!
Nice park for a walk, but most of the trails are old woods roads. It's a great place for a nature walk with the family and there are a few nice views and old ruins worth checking out. Serious hikers who are looking for rugged, hiking trails may find "The Tourne" a bit lacking
What a great park in our own back yard. The hike could be challenging, but the view is beautiful. The park itself is clean and offers bathrooms and a cookout area
We wanted to walk our dog some place different so we decided to check out Tourne Park. We came through the east side park entrance on the Boonton side and parked in the first lot. There was a large permanent park map in the lot but they were out of the printed maps you could use on the hike, so we decided to just check out what was around the lot. One trail (Red) lead us down to a small stream where the dog got a drink and another trail (Green) was short but rather steep in spots. We were disappointed you couldn’t drive through the park to the west side entrance. Next time we visit we will bring a printed park map and be prepared to do some longer hikes.
The Tourne is a well-maintained and well-used park in Boonton. Trails vary from old wood roads to old railway beds (Ogden Mine Railway) to footpaths. There are plenty of "facilities" (loos, picnic tables etc...), brooks and a couple of lakes. Also a well kept wildflower trail loop. Wildlife is not abundant but we encountered birds, the ubiquitous deer, toads and a snake. A nice place to go for a walk in the woods.
We are regular visitors at Tourne as we take the dog a few times a week. There are spots for picnics with facilities to barbeque. We have seen some great birds including turkey vulture. There's is a farm nearby where we get our fresh fruit and vegetables.
I grew up around here, and going back to the Tourne was such a delight. This was the second time I had gone back to visit in years, and the previous time was in the fall, lovely. When you live in a bigger city that doesn't have these types of charming quiet spots to just sit and appreciate life, you look at a visit to The Tourne in an entirely different way. There's nothing fancy about it, and there doesn't need to be. Nature isn't really fancy in its natural state. But if you enjoy sitting in a beautiful setting, or walking around the park, or climbing on some hills or rocks, then there are few places better than this.
The Tourne is a wonderful County park for picnicking, walking, cross country skiing, exploring and dog walking ( on a leash)AThere is a baseball field and many picnic sites with charcoal grills. A stream runs through the park and you can walk past a huge lake made by the beavers damming up part of the stream. One of the very unique features is a lovely wildflower trail maintained by the Rockaway Valley Garden Club. You can hike to the top of the Tourne on 2 different trails and from there you have a wonderful panoramic view. It is even possible to see NYC on a clear day. The walk to the top can easily be done in 20 minutes. It is all uphill of course but there are benches along the way and it is a minerate incline and well worth the walk, The park has 2 parking lots so drive all the way to the second one to be in the center of the park.. Porta johns available by parking lots only.
My wife and I and our Irish Setters' Favorite place to hike. Not too many hills, ( strenuous ) and beautiful views. Picnic, swim, play, bike ride, and all that at the Tourne.
