I can't say enough about the experience I had at Melovino Meadery on Saturday night. I bought a groupon for a tour and tasting for 2 for $19. We got there at 5, and the tour started around 5:10. The owner is the one who runs the tour and the tasting along with some helpers along the way. The knowledge and passion he shows for what he does is inspiring. I had heard of mead, but never tasted it. Hearing the history of mead and the specifics that the owner went through to get the one and only meadery in NJ up and running was very interesting. The tasting was fun, not everything I tasted was a winner for me, but I enjoyed most of them. I was excited for this up and coming drink, and decided to become a member to try different varieties as they craft them. Some of the upcoming meads in the works he discussed during the tour sounded amazing. I look forward to going back with my husband and friends. I think this is a great way to do something different for date night.
I had never even heard of mead previously. This place is pretty new and the owner seems highly motivated to do a good job. There is a brief history of mead and then he explains the struggles of creating a meadery here in NJ. The final part of the tour is the tasting in which you can try 6 different meads. They are very sweet, more so even than many of the sweeter white wines out there. This is worth exploring of you are close by and want to try something different.
Do you know Mead? It's an alcoholic drink made from fermented honey and at Melovino Meadery you can learn about the production, hear about the unusual types of Mead that Melovino is creating and enjoy a tasting with 6 different types of mead. While the tour and tasting were great and deserving of 5 stars, there were a few too many people on the tour and the tasting experience would have been better if the tasting table was bigger or there were less people present. I was sort of stuck in a corner for the tasting so I brought the rating to 4. Overall, I highly recommend this experience.PS - It is a little hard to find so if you go be sure to drive around to the back side of the shopping center to find the entrance
Went the other day on a whim (after making reservations online). I have never in my life had Mead, so this seemed like an interesting drink to try. First thing when you go - when they say the back of the building, they are not kidding - go to the WAY BACK of the building, by the dumpsters and you will find the entrance to their facility. Secondly, really nice guys working the business - and very knowledgable about the whole Mead making process - it is different from beer and wine making. Then there is the tasting. It was a very enjoyable experience - again, especially having never had Mead in my life. I would say that the taste and texture of the Mead is similar to that of a white wine. And in the same vein as wine, the different honey's drastically change the taste of the mead. They had 5 different Mead's for us to taste - all were enjoyable, but like anything, we liked some more than the others. If you are looking for something fun and different to do for an hour or so on a Saturday afternoon, I would strongly reocmmend this to anyone who enjoys a new and different beverage experience. Also - no kids, this is 21 and over.
