You don't need to be a skier to find this a place worth visiting. During ski season the lodge is warm and offers a great variety of quick food for lunch. Grab a hamburger and coffee and pull up a chair to watch the skiers zip past or the bluffs (bring some binoculars) for deer. Don't be too surprised to see an eagle or two either. This is a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery. Wrap up a leg if you want to create some sympathy.
Sundown is definitely your neighborhood ski resort with a great view of the surrounding area. If you're looking for a fun place to take your family or hangout with a few friends, you want to come here. All the runs are long except for 3 of the bunny hills. Also, after you're done skiing, stop into the bar to checkout the locals...you won't be disappointed. Bring your dollar bills and thumb tacks.
My husband and I just returned to Sundown after a 15+ year hiatus. It was an excellent last minute trip! The snow was nicely groomed and maintained. Good "long" runs ... when compared to neighbouring resorts in Illinois and Wisconsin. Lift lines were non-existent. The staff was very friendly.Besides the great snow, we would return for a few reasons...1. Easy to get to.2. Good selection of nearby lodging.3. Great trendy restaurant and bar scene (for a small city)4. VALUE. VALUE. VALUE.From the $44 lift ticket, to lunch at the cafe, to beers and Bloody Marys at the bar, we NEVER felt as if we were being price gouged. And because everything was such a great value, we ended up staying longer at Sundown than at other resorts we've visited over the last several years. Heck, when the General Manager of the resort notices a small back up at the bar and jumps in to help out, you just know the place is being managed well. Thanks to the Sundown crew for a great visit. We'll definitely be back!
Sundown Mountain is amazing. The staff helps you through every step of getting ready to safety checks to conquering the bunny hill! I felt safe the whole time and the facility is set up perfect. I can't wait to return next year with everyone!
This is the third or fourth time I have skiied here and there is always something new to discover. The snow conditions were very good and it seems like they can make a lot of snow here in a hurry. Friendly staff and a homey feel.
I always love coming back and skiing at least one day at Sundown. I learned to ski here when I was younger. The people are great and the snow crew does a super job!
A very good place for skiing n snowboarding.I went here with my friends for skiing and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment we spent there. If you are a beginner It's worth going for an instructor. They spent quality time with you teaching n explaining. There were various slopes to keep you engaged, be it for beginners, intermediates or for pros. Apart from that, staff was extremely helpful n respectful. Extra bucks for head gear, please be aware. Food is decent for its price. I will certainly go again and will recommend this place for winter fun lovers.
This was a return visit and I have to say it just keeps getting better every time I visit. They were offering some super early season specials and I was a little leery that the conditions would be good as there was no snow on the ground near my home only 70 miles away. They obviously had been hard at work with the snow making crews as the conditions were excellent. The entire area was open and snow was in great shape. All of the staff there is very friendly. The food is some of the best I have had at any ski area and not over priced. I would recommend the home made soups! I did a two day trip this time and found a great deal on a room only a few miles from the resort at the Holiday Inn Express. They also have upgraded the offerings at the bar this year and have a large selection of craft beer on tap and a pretty good bloody mary. I feel pretty lucky to have a ski area of this quality as close to where I live and will definitely return.
I grew up skiing at Sundown and now take my kids out there. It's a great place to learn before tackling the mountains. Sundown has a nice variety of runs and the addition of the terrain park was a big hit. The trails are groomed nicely and the lift lines are usually pretty good but we tend to avoid the peak times. Ski and snowboard lessons are available as well as rentals. The lodges are nice and "moutain-ish." There is a bar in the north lodge as well as concessions (burgers, fries, etc.). You can bring in your own food but only on the lower level. My kids love skiing here. See you on the slopes!
Thank you so much for the kind comments! Hope to see you out on the slopes this season! Cheers to a snowy winter!
We are so glad you had a great time! Our Snow Crew really does an excellent job maintaining the slopes for all of us to play on. I will pass on your praises, we hope to see you around again this winter!
Joe, you rock! Thanks for the kind words! We won't tell anyone you ate the fries twice... we do that quite often, they are delicious :) We are so glad you got to spend time with your family on the slopes and hope you come back again this winter!
Thanks for the review... We are so glad you had a good time on the slopes! As far as the building set-up, we took your advise and we are in the middle of making a new lodge that will house all ticketing and rental in ONE convenient location! The building will be active Winter 2015. Hope to see you back soon :)
Thanks for bringing the family to Sundown, Angel! As it looks like you already know, we will have a new lodge, Winter 2015 that will house lift tickets and rental. Your family will be able to grab their rentals and step outside onto the Beginner Hill, no more stairs. Hope to see you guys back again for another weekend trip!
So happy you had a great time, Libby! Kuddos to you guys for trying something new and not 'hibernating' for the winter... Hope to see you back again this coming season! Cheers :)
