Free and well worth the time to explore. Make sure to look over the guest registry pages on display.
If you are staying at the hotel, check it out! Small but cool and seeing John Wayne's cabin is a trip if you're into westerns.
This was formally the old Goulding home of Harry and 'Mike' Lorane Goulding with the museum showing the furnishing of the family. Very interesting as they lived there from the mid 1920s up to the 1970s or 80s as I recall. Life there was by necessity quite simple and sometimes hard.
A real treat - lots of authentic western stuff and it really made you appreciate the way the Gouldings lived, made the hotel make more sense and its proximity to the park. If you stay in Gouldings you have to visit, and if you stay at the view, I would make the trip up the road to check it out. Whole museuem is really quite small, so will only htake about half an hour, but worth it
I'm a "Duke" fan from back in the 50s. Monument Valley was the area in which he made a few of his most famous earlier movies. Was fun and exciting to be where they were made, learn the history of they happened to be filmed there and to see actual props/structures used in those movies.
The Museum,&the gift shop where great, very friendly staff. & naturally the beautiful & breathtaking scenery were part of the charm of this special place.
We stayed at Goulding's Lodge so it made sense to visit the museum while walking around the grounds after dinner. It's small but has enough artifacts, and a history of the region, to make it worthwhile if you are at Goulding's anyway. A half hour should be adequate unless you are very, very interested in the history of the Lodge and this area. Not sure I would go out of my way to visit it however. Of course, Gouldings has a store, gas station, restaurant, etc. so most people stop here when in the area.
A great little place to visit, see pictures of some very famous movie stars and some memorabilia. No charge to look around, but donations accepted.
My mother and I took a road trip through this area. Monument Valley and The View Hotel were among our many stops. My mother is a HUGE John Wayne fan and I surprised her with a visit to Gouldings Trading Post. She absolutely loved walking around the property; walking through the museum and learning more about her western movie idol. Fun stop!
Took the ride here since we were at Monument Valley anyway. Nice little gift shop and movie memorabilia, so it's a bonus for western movie fans. Great views from here, but after the Valley, they don't seem as grandiose. We spent more time in the valley than planned, so were unable to explore as thoroughly as we had hoped. Definitely a stop and added reason to visit this area.
Quite a ways off of the main road. Now that The View is open, Goulding's is not what it used to be. Be prepared to climb strairs and hills. Not friendly to walkers. Nice modest museum. Gift shop was nice.
We had a great time there. Lots to see about the Gouldings and all the movie items. Take your time and soak up the local atmosphere. fun Stop!
Learned a lot about famous old western movie filming in Monument Valley. A real delight as I am an old western movie fan.
Need to see it when you have a meal at Gouldings which has better food than the View hotel. For movie buffs it has a section of many of the films shot in the valley.
This is about the Gouldings and how they established a trading post in this remote location. If you like western history and a success story, this museum documents it well. Staff are friendly and helpful. Lots about John Ford and John Wayne too including some hand written pieces.
