awesome fishing in the area. But use worms or fly's. Higher up the river you go, the better fishing is. Native cutthroats and browns. But watch out for private property
Loved stopping in Deloris for lunch and another time for coffee and pastry. The views get spectacular as you drive up the canyon, and the traffic is not bad. Do this drive when the aspen are in fall color.
I drove this on a Sunday morning. The road to Telluride is fantastic. I actually liked it better than the drive from Montrose to Durango. Do irt early in he mornng before traffic builds.
Drive up Dolores River Canyon, but also farther taking 62 over to Ridgway and down the road to Durango and back to Cortez. Between Ridgeway Ouray is worth the trip by itself, but Silverton is nothing special though the terminal of the train from Durango is there. This is known as the Skyline Drive
The drive between Cortez and Telluride is one of the most beautiful in Colorado. There are a couple of really nice RV parks in the Rico area. Absolutely gorgeous canyon.
Very beautiful. Lots of gorgeous campsites. Great place to take a picnic lunch and just hangout for a while. Fly fishing a favorite in that area. Antique store in town is very nice. A must see!
Nice place to visit to get away from the Texas heat wave. Nice backcountry roads to check out with a Jeep or ATV. Be sure to check out the West Dolores River Canyon.
Beautiful scenery! Would have been helpful to have more signs directing you to views, we wasted a lot of time driving around but still worth the trip.
Beautiful drive with very few cars on the road. The area changed from very dry, barren mountains to lush green as we approached Grand Junction, CO. We had to stop several times just to soak up the surroundings.
What a wonderful drive! We love coming here and enjoy the beautiful scenery every time! I would recommend this drive if you have the time.
Dolores is a wonderful little town, on the way north from Cortez to Telluride and Ridgway. The Hollywood Bar, burnt down in 2012, will be rebuilt!
The Canyon was in its Fall colours so very pretty. We stopped at a restaurant and had a sandwich and coffee ...service and food was good but it was fly season and put ME off the salad bar.
For the map challenged- take 145 to Dolores and then up to Telluride (lovely town full of rich people and rich dogs, stop in for a fruit smoothy). If you want to do the full loop go up to 62 and then cut over to 550 to get back to Cortez. 550 is a little scary (shear drop offs with no guardrails) Have your heart checked before you go.
This is a very scenic river canyon with ever-changing mountain views. We were lucky enough to be driving it at the peak of aspen viewing, providing interesting patterns of aspens and conifers on the mountain sides.
We did a day of hiking in this area on marked hiking paths. Loved it. You could find paths that were strenuous and some that were easier. Found a nice park to have lunch in as well.
