The research center was a surprise. If you are a botanist, you will LOVE this place. Meanwhile, the rest of us were astonished at how many different types of wildflowers there were up there. Road up there got a bit dicey but worth it.

The laboratory in Gothic does cutting edge research in ecology. They seem to be opening up to the public with tours and kids' nature camp. They have a store with guides and t-shirts. And it's all very beautiful.

A friendly and helpful welcome center, the picturesque buildings and of course, the wildflowers. A river runs through it. Fine places to picnic weather permitting.

After many trips to Gunnison and Crested Butte over the years I had never visited Gothic. The road to Gothic was only about 8 miles north of Crested Butte. The aspens were turning later than usual this year but still found some good photo opportunities. The Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory was closed for tours. I was intrigued when I read about all the studies going on there. I will investigate it and Schofield Pass next year.

Judd Falls Trail, in Gothic, is one of the closest hiking trails to Crested Butte. It makes a pleasant half day hike for a beginner like me. It's only a mile from Gothic Road to the falls, but it seems longer if you're not acclimated to the elevation. We encountered a real cattle drive crossing the trail, being driven by a real cowgirl - a real treat for us Floridians. The aspens were already turning color in mid-September - beautifulThere's a restroom at the base.

One of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. The week after Labor Day was perfect. Wild flowers , though dry, still had color. The Rocky Mountain Biology Lab is a good place. The roads are doable in a low Suburu. Lots of cows on free range. fun to hear them moo. Lovely deer. Didn't see elk.

This ghost town was purchased by Rocky Mountain Biological Lab so the only way to view the buildings is to join their daily tour (at 11:00 am) which I didn't know about so I was too late for the tour

The drive to Gothic from Crested Butte is pretty. There are some old buildings but not much else. We did not drive much further as it required a four-wheel drive.

Gothic, home of the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, is a beautiful area nestled up in the mountains. There is a scientific research laboratory there which houses researchers from around the world, primarily in the summer. Lots of great hiking.

Fun place to travel to on mountain road. Usually lots of flowers but 2012 was too dry. Worth the scenery traveling up the mountain

Go through Crested Butte and head towards Mount Crested Butte ski resort. Continue on the road until it turns into a dirt road. It is leisurely drive and beautiful, especially in the fall. Lot of mountain bikers as well as vehicles. There are hiking trails if you travel past Gothic and continue the journey. Recommend this if you are going to be in the Crested Butte area for a few days.

The old town of Gothic is now pretty much synonymous with the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) headquarters, but if you're on your way through to the fine trails beyond, it's worth a stop at the general store to look around.Be careful, though, to park only in the (limited) area available for that by the store, or in the (also limited) lot on the right just before you come into town, since all other parking is restricted to RMBL staff and expected visitors. Also, *please* respect the signs asking you not to walk around the area, since many long-standing biological experiments can vanish beneath your bootprints. One small point of interest: -- The rustic outhouse near that edge-of-town parking lot has one of the funnier signs I've seen in the Rockies: CLOSE THE LID! SAVE A MARMOT!

with all the climate change exploding around us, this is the foremost biological research station in the world. Just to walk around the Rocky Mountain Biological Lab is humbling. It's in a setting that takes your breadth away, and all the biology experts are amazing. Check out the new multi-million dollar lab that's just opened and learn more about how the high-altitude nature is being dramatically changed in just the last few years. It's distressing what's happening, but the scientists who spend their summers in Gothic are like the early-warning systems for everyone on the planet.

What a fantastic place to visit and hike. The views were wonderful.

Tiny remote village accessible only by dirt road hides best hiking trail in area. Great for kids. Saw elk on gorgeous trail with jaw dropping views of Gothic Mt.
