The opportunity to ride a bike, walk or jog even roller blade along the canal is great! There area few fine places to eat and drink in Fairport and the immediate surrounds.

No crowds. Lots of snow and ice. There's an ice rink nearby, food and shopping, too. Why wait for summer?

Now a place for boat viewing and strolling in villages that border the canal. Fairport and Pittsford are two good choices, where the municipalities have improved the area and walkways by the canal. Places to eat, walk and shop

This entire stretch of water has been greatly developed for recreation and beauty, which also supports the preservation of an interesting historical transportation highway. Each town has done it's own job of enhancing the area. It's definitely a welcome phenomenon in upstate New York.

I've walked along the canal many times, in each season. I always think of its history as part of the development of NY State. A pleasant walk, calm surroundings, interesting bridges & locks.

I took a stroll along with canal path today, and found it was enjoyable even in the middle of winter. The paths are empty now, although care must be taken because they are icy and not really "plowed" of snow. Still, the businesses and restaurants along the path are open, so go and enjoy yourself! Just dress warmly because the wind does blow hard in January.

Family has visited several times for Canal Days, trips to library, visiting various coffee houses and ice cream shops. There are a lot of small gift shops, but you need to drive (or boat) to Pittsford or drive to Victor for serious shopping.

We strolled down the canal in the town of Pittsford, NY, on a lovely October afternoon. The leaves were changing colors and the views were splendid.A lovely afternoon was had by all.

And I saw photos after the snow that were breathtaking. Lots of seats for those who need them, squirrels fur raging for nuts. Just beautiful to walk or run beside the still canal loads of entry and exit points. Surrounded by trees. Can't believe you can leave your bag on the seat of the car without a care in the world

I'm an avid bike rider and the canal trail from the Genesee River to Palmyra is my beat. I've ridden all along this section hundreds of times and it never gets old on a trail that's very old and historic. You'll see many pieces of history from the early days of the canal system and lots of newer homes and structures and services. What's very nice is that much has been done to the trail in recent years with new paving around Fairport extending 2 or 3 miles to the East. There's a pedestrian bridge now over the canal just east of Turk Hill Road that connects to the old trolley trail running for about four miles east to the Wayne County line. You can take that and then follow roads north to meet up with the canal again. The only place you can access food and other services in this stretch are in Pittsford, Bushnell's Basin, Fairport and Palmyra. But, if you have a map, you can leave the canal at nearly any place and find services not far away. On the West end of this section at the Genesee River, you can take the River trails (both east and west sides) north to downtown Rochester or south to link up with the Genesee Valley Trail that runs near the river all the way into the Southern Tier.

It's very enjoyable to take a bike ride along the Erie Canal without having to worry about inclines or traffic. It takes less than an hour at a leisure pace from Pittsford to Fairport where you can find plenty opportunities for refreshments right at the canal.

Fairport has expertly tapped into their unique location and made it a destination. Smack dab on the Erie Canal, this beautiful little village treasures the past while it welcomes the future. Restaurants, events, shopping and the canal experience draws boaters and landlubbers alike. I cannot say enough how my family enjoys this town. There is something for everyone.

Time to relax and take your time cruising through the canal,If you need to stop every town had a great dock space and welcomes boaters unlike most waterfront towns

The canal is such a great thing to take advantage of! You can walk on the path, run, bike, rollerblade, or enjoy sitting on a park bench. Of course, in the fall, it's even more beautiful with the leaves changing colors!

Neat experience to join hundreds of sweep and sculling rowers for the Lift Bridge Regatta on September 28. The Erie Canal is so straight and wide without the lilypads lining the inside shore of our rivers numerous sharp curves. Our home rowing venue is the Chadakoin River which is the outlet for Chautauqua Lake in Jamestown, NY. Nothing to dislike at all...
