My husband and I finally stopped here on a whim last week and we were shocked by how crowded it was -- but then again that's always a good sign and we were not disappointed. They have an interesting menu and drink selection that left us wanting to come back! Some of the cocktails were pricey considering how small they were - BUT -- they were delicious. FYI -- We came on a Sunday around 7pm and although it was packed we were able to get a seat/table!
This place is almost too good to review. It's goddamn crowded enough without more people coming here but I suppose it's inevitable now that Queens is the new BK thanks to the dicks at the NY TImes. Whatever. Craft beer and selections from around the world instead of the usual Bud, Heineken, Mich Ultra and so on. inventive menu with small savory plates as well as more substantial things. It's not fancy by any means and it's a little loud - but if you wanted to have an intense conversation you can buy a bottle of wine and stay home. The chicken livers were sensational but I wasn't crazy about the mac n' cheese (it's a little too precious as cavatappi and various cheeses - thank you Food Network all-stars). Brussel sprouts are not to be missed - they're so delicious you have to wonder why you ever hated them as a kid.The Haddock and chips is right on and near as good as anything you'd get in Ireland (or Boston for that matter). The poutine is basically disco fries for hipsters who've been to Canada but outstanding nonetheless. The pork belly... it seems like everyone has pork belly now but damn this dish is great. We've been there six times and have gotten it every single time. Amazing. Oh, there's a whiskey menu if that's your thing and also an intriguing electronic draft beer menu that indicates when a new keg is being tapped. The place fills up fast so don't be in a hurry because you'll probably end up waiting for a table. Staff is pretty friendly and attentive and if you ask to sample a draft beer they'll bring you a taste. Kind of surprised that they use styrofoam containers for to-go items, though. Minus one point. Anyway: don't go here.
I love the charcuterie plate at the bar with some fun drinks or just sit at the bar tables and observe the scene. It is definitely a fun fun addition to Forest Hills
I feel lucky to have Station House in my neighborhood. From Happy Hour to Brunch, it's always a pleasure to be here. The criticism is the ridiculously loud music when the place is already jam-packed.
Station House opened around the time I moved to Forest Hills, April of 2013. At first, I went there on a regular basis. But then it got too popular and too crowded. It is now very hard to get a seat at the bar! So, I guess they are a victim of their own success! They have a great selection of draft beers and they are always changing the kegs. In fact, the beer selection is the biggest draw here. They also have a huge selection of whiskeys. The bar tenders are very knowledgeable and friendly but sometimes, when the place is busy, it is hard to get their attention. When Station House first opened, I found the food to be exceptionally good. It seems to have slipped a bit since then but it is still pretty good and much more creative than the average beer hall. The mac and cheese with ham is awesome. For $11 you get the whole skillet, big enough for your whole dinner. I've had some excellent burgers here, too. The first time I had the ribs they were huge, tender and juicy. When I tried them another time they were small and dry. The food I had for brunch was kind of bland. If you are like me and you like trying different beers, come here. You might get some really good food, too. Or you might not.
Station House is a fairly small place that is a good for a couple of drinks with a friend(s) or a bite to eat. The atmosphere is casual, the service is good and the staff is friendly. As the name suggest it is near the Forest Hills train station so a good for a drink/bite after a day of work.
