We arrived at this site only 40 min. to closing and the staff was so accommodating. Waiting for us to take our time on the tour of house and gardens. I am sure we were there late, but they gave us the "overtime" tour with no complaints. Excellent tour, many artifacts and a beautiful quilt display as well.
The volunteers here hold interesting workshops and events every season. I attended one on antique quilts. There is a small gift shop and a beautiful garden area. Check their schedule!
A weekend with my hubby, to see the Howe Caverns and nearby attractions…we told about this place by the people who owned the B&B we stayed at. Very cute little park and stream, with great old stone buildings. Glad we took their advice. The pics are great to share with our family.
We happened upon this history home on a Sunday drive along the old Mohawk Turnpike (Rte 5). Fort Johnson was built in 1749 by Sir William Johnson to house his family. He fortified it during the French and Indian war. There is a visitors center in the back and we watched an orientation video (less than 10 mins) before being guided through the main building and the grounds. Extensive effort has been put into the building and grounds, including artifacts from local history (Amsterdam, NY). Highly recommended if you are interested in local history or early American history!
