This park is so beautiful at anytime of the year. Sunrise is stunning. It was very cold on the day of our visit (3deg F) so we did not stay long - still a stunning view.
We biked to the lighthouse from Hither Hills Campground. Rolling hills; road bike. We did a short walk around the lighthouse and enjoyed a visit to the lighthouse and gift shop. We stopped at two parks on the way there and return for a short walk and snack break. Recommend a stop here if you are in the area.
Montauk is amazing, and if you're bored, the lighthouse is a nice little trip. Either way, Montauk is heavenly!
Took a couple hours to make the trek out to the lighthouse, but worth it. Super pretty views, small gift shop, tons of parking, good strolling area for people. There's plenty of small towns around for shopping and sightseeing.
Hired a airport car service Long Island for travel from LaGuardia airport to Montauk Light House. The car service was pre-arranged through online booking. Me and my family was well accommodated in the car. The chauffeur was proved as excellent tour guide though and he took us straight to the Montauk Point Light House. We spend the whole day there and enjoyed the scenario. It's truly a great place to enjoy our vacation. Later the chauffeur took us to Long Island at my cousins house.
I went to see the lighthouse in the snow and even though it was closed, it looked magical. The little restaurant off to the side was still open for coffee, etc and the majestic view made the extra miles worth it.In August, we took our wedding party to visit the lighthouse and walk through the museum and everyone had a wonderful time. The view is spectacular and the charm and history make it a special day trip!
Even though I visited the lighthouse on winter, while it was snowing,I can say that is worth the trip to the end of the island.
I was out on Long Island for work for a month and decided to take a day off and drive out to Montauk and explore the eastern tip of the island. I was disappointed to find that the lighthouse charges for parking and again for access. While I understand the need for maintenance and programs, I found the price to be way too steep at over $30 for parking and admission. In my opinion, skip the lighthouse and walk down to the beach on either side. You can skirt along the walkway outside the lighthouse fence and still get a great view.
Montauk Point Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in NY state (200+ years) and has been declared a National Landmark. It is located at the very tip of southern Long Island. For a fee, you can climb the 137 steps to the top of the lighthouse for a great view of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Block Island on a clear day. If you are not up to the climb, there is a small cafe/museum which offers a gorgeous view overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. When there, visit the gift shop for local souvenirs.Within Montauk Point, there are six state parks filled with many miles of trails and roads leading to prime hiking paths, and guided hike options exist for those seeking to learn about the area and native wildlife including bird watching. Whale watching and fishing expeditions are also offered in this area. Lighthouse hours vary depending on the time of year and there is also a charge for parking, unless you have the Passport sticker which allows free parking access to all Long Island state parks.Montauk Point is a beautiful spot to visit for locals and tourists alike.
definitely worth the 10 minute drive. There is actually a lot to do around the area if you like to hike and explore.
We were there in September, and it was cold, rainy and windy. We still enjoyed ourselves :) Easy parking across the street. Absolutely gorgeous setting, with views from every angle. We loved watching the fishermen on the rocks. You can buy a ticket that allows you to climb all the way up to the very top, which I would highly recommend! Very informative display as well.
I loved the rock climbing around the lighthouse, fantastic views, interesting history and a lovely walk.
The areas at the base of the lighthouse had lots of educational historical informational informational and artifacts on display. The trek to the top of the lighthouse on the narrow stairwel can be physically challenging to some visitors. The line for this can be long and extend all the way outside the building where it can be very hot. The view at the top is epic and it can be very refreshing and windy.
We like the area for birding. We are alarmed at the over-development of the area in Montauk and adjacent areas. The natural habitats are disappearing
it was a nice trip to the lighthouse, nice sights and something to learn on history. the parking is pricy for a short visit but for the whole day is ok. we came very late and had to pay the day rate. would be nice if they told us that in 10 min the parking would be free of charge in particular when one asks for short stay. nice beach in the vicinity.
