We had a very nice beach day at Sachuest Beach. Where we sat was very busy -close to where the entrance was but there was nice stretches to walk where there were few people. There was a lot of red seaweed which may have also contributed to people bunching together on the beach. We brought a picnic with us but also bought some food from their cafe it was a nice treat. The bathrooms were busy but clean enough and the walk to and from the car is pretty short.
This is a lovely, small beach with adequate parking. Within walking distance are hotels and great eating places. You are also not far from the Tennis Hall of Fame and many shops are also within walking distance. The beach itself,is clean and well sheltered. Great views also of some of Newports beautiful houses.
Apart from the parking fee of $10 on weekdays or $20 Holiday/weekends, there is nothing to not love about this place. Great snack bar, combed soft sand, moderate surf at one end, flat cove on the other. The sandy bottom is under 4 feet deep for at least 100 yards at high tide and more like 200 yards at low tide. Locals tip: parking is free after 4pm, make it an afternoon visit and save a buck or two. Mid-summer late afternoon is a great time to visit and offers excellent sunset views over St. George's "castle". They have showers at the surf end and the main house now for rinsing and probably 10 portable toilets in the lot. At the main house there are proper flush toilets that are surprisingly clean. I declare this the best beach in RI!
This is our go to beach. On one end where the big climbing rocks are is where the surfer's do their thang. During the summer season there are usually boards to rent and lessons to take. For swimmer's only go to the opposite end of the beach, it is less crowded and often has less seaweed. There is usually a sand sculpture most days in the summer on that end. Beware of the seagulls by season's end they can get aggressive, hide your food when you are in the water and hold onto it tight when eating it ( esp for little kids as that can be startling). The walks on the rocks near surfer's end are not to be missed esp taking a peak at Purgatory Chasm ( not to be confused with Sutton, MA) up near the bridge. Beware of poison ivy on the way up. Be sure to enjoy a Del's lemonade, a RI favorite. Pull up a towel and build a drip sand castle.
This is a beautiful, beautiful, peaceful place where you can take an easy walk and experience the ocean, the rocks, the wildlife, the wild flora and the sunshine. Just exquisite. Been back several times and never get tired of it. If you're in the Newport area, take a break from the restaurants and chatchke shops and get over here.
Second beach is a long broad beautiful beach with surfing possible on one end. It is packed in the summer but winter beach walks on an empty beach are very relaxing.
Liked the broad expanse of beach for a good walk. Convenient and plentiful parking. Didn't 'dislike' anything.
We walked along the shore although it was in November not December. It's a great beach to go to in the summer. It does have a fee ( I believe to park & enter) but there was no fee in the colder months we parked & just walked along the beach. It's beautiful & pristine. In the summer this beach is so popular it does get crowded. Over all it's a great beach!!
The best part of going off season is the free parking and lack of crowds. I believe it costs $20 per car on weekends during the summer. The beach is great for walking and your dogs are welcomed this time of year. The beach is still clean and you can get a nice long walk in with beautiful scenic views. We even saw some pretty birds which came over from the Norman Bird Sanctuary from across the street.
Well, just tow hours from Boston, Newport offers the Mansion tours, national sailing events, many restaurants and a beautiful coastal setting. Have been here a few times but 1st time in the fall. Came to watch friends run the Newport Marathon and couldn't have asked for a prettier course or better day. Most of the course hugs the coastline na dif you were not too focused on your personal time should serve as a very enjoyable setting.
When we were there (mid-september), the bathrooms and everythng else was locked up and boarded up. There was a port-a-john. Pretty place, not crowded in September.
We always try to hit Sachuest (Second ) Beach a couple of times during our annual RI vacation. We come here after Labor Day when it's not too crowded, parking is free and the water is still quite warm ( not numbingly cold like Maine! ). It is a great place for walking, snoozing and reading a good book. This year the weather was pretty much perfect and the red seaweed wasn't too bad. Unfortunately ( or maybe not? ), the concession stand is always closed when we visit, so can't comment on that.
Beautiful scenery, lots of dogs playing and not super crowded. Fun to watch the surfers, lots of parking and easy to get to.
This beach has everything for an active person!First of all, it is long, so you can jog all you want, David Hasslehoff style. The water is sometimes infested with red seaweed (not red tide) but it usually does not span the entire beach.Secondly, it is warm water during the summer, well, warm for New England.Thirdly, it has pretty reasonable access to surfing, however, you should get there in the off peak times. Otherwise, you will be one of the many, many surfers populating the water as if they were seagulls looking for potato chips. You can rent a surfboard or paddleboard, too, along with all the other various accoutrement.Fourthly, it has a main facility where you can use the bathroom, shower, change, etc. There is a small snack shack that offers some decent food. Don't go expecting gluten free food.On the other side of the beach is the Sachuest Point, (I believe it is called). It has some sick rocky shore which would be good for obstacle course race training, more focused on balance, footing, and carrying a rock.On the other side of the Point is another beach, more suitable for young families with wandering little ones. The water is calmer, and there are generally less people. Parking is still available. When approaching, be careful of the various bikers, runners, and roller bladers going up and down the road to Sachuest Point. It is, again, a great place to get in a varied workout.Fourthly, you
The town of Middletown obviously doesn't want to make waste water management a priority. There is raw sewage flowing into Sachuest Bay. The smell is overwhelming and I was horrified to learn, after further investigation, that it was not a storm drain pipe but a sewer pipe pumping untreated, raw sewage into the water inches away from kids swimming and surf lessons. It is both sickening and depressing that this has been an ongoing problem that has yet to be seriously addressed. It is 2014 and we still have antiquated systems draining harmful bio hazard material into our swimming holes? It's hard to believe that this still goes on. There is not a single good excuse.
