Great memorial. Easy to access. It is outside so dress warm or go in warm weather. A large sundial that crosses veterans names.
I still struggle to put words together for this memorial.... They have it set on a sun dial and each person's name listed on the memorial is in a place that the dial will 'point' to at the time of death.... I visited with my father who is a Vietnam vet
As the title suggests the site is a Vietnam Veterans Memorial. To my knowledge, it is unique and not another one like it in the country. It is an engineering marvel and must be seen to appreciate. The access is easy but since it is outside, I would recommend that you visit it in warm weather.
This is one of the best Vietnam Veterans Memorials I have ever seen!! There is a commanding view of the capitol building. The memorial itself is very reflective and memorializes in an incredible way those who died in the Vietnam War. Definitely need to visit!!
a short drive from downtown. Tranquil and beautiful. Enormous sundial. The sun shines on all stones with veterans names on them, throughout the day. BEAUTIFUL
If you are interested in history, this is worth a stop. They even had paper where you can make rubbings.
This is a beautiful and moving tribute. It helps to read the explanation of how the sundial works when you arrive there. Then get up close and examine the memorial. It is breathtaking. It is a very quiet and peaceful place.
This was a brief stop for our group caravanning from Louisville to Lexington. The Memorial combines astronomy, art, architecture and history to memorialize Kentuckians who died or were missing in action while serving during the Vietnam war. It was fascinating and moving and has a great view across to the state Capitol building. Avoid the grassy field. One of our party was eaten alive by chiggers.
If your in the area, it's neat to see. Doesn't take long. The engineering and the thought behind the design makes it even more incredible. A great tribute to those who served and lost their lives.
We were steered to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, by the Kentucky governors/capital grounds gardener whom we met at the Governors garden. It is a sobering reminder of those who gave their all. It was a worthwhile side trip, the sun dial is amazing.
This is our second time visiting Frankfort and we looked forward to a return visit to this beautiful memorial to the Vietnam Veterans who didn't make it home. It was as impressive as our first visit and a loving way to remember and honor those from the area who served their country and paid the ultimate price. We highly recommend you take the time to visit this memorial if you are in the Frankfort area. You won't be sorry.
As Memorial Day draws near, it is fitting to visit the memorial to the souls that lost their lives. It is not a flashy item but simple and thought provoking in the way it shows the shadow based on when the person lost their life. There is wildlife all around. We saw dear on the drive up the memorial. The view is inspiring as you can see the Ky State Capital from the parking lot.
This is a great tribute to those who gave everything for our freedom. I will make it a point to visit the memorial each and every time I visit Frankfort out of respect for those it honors. Anyone traveling to Frankfort needs to visit this memorial.
This is an amazing tribute. I don't no how someone planned this out but they did a fantastic job. I live close and pass on a regular basis ,so every now and then I just have to stop and have a few moments to myself.
The photos that I saw of this memorial did not prepare me for the experience. The worker at the Military History Museum told us that we had to actually walk up on the memorial to see the significance; I'm glad he told us because it's a very meaningful tribute up close. The sundial does not look like much from the perspective of the historical markers on lower ground, but walking up on the memorial and seeing the way the shadow of the sundial falls on the names provides a moving moment. The area around the memorial is quiet and peaceful, and a nice view of the state capitol is across the road. We were glad that we made time to stop.
