civil war fort duffield

Great outing while visiting my boyfriend at Fort Knox! We're both into history, especially military history so this was a great place to explore and learn more about the Civil War! The path going up to the top of the fort was extremely steep, but once we made it to the top, the view was spectacular. We met a lot of nice people who were also exploring, and the volunteers who take care of the fort were very knowledgeable. There were quite a few trails around the main part of the fort, but we didn't have enough time to explore. Would love to go back and spend some more time exploring. Make sure you visit the cemetery on the other side of the fort!

This is one of the few surviving earthen forts. Located high on hills overlooking the Ohio River, it is evident why this Union site was chosen to guard the railroad. In the small town below, there are several homes of interest: the SEARS home (ordered and build from the 'mail-order' store), the home used as headquarters by GEN Sherman, and the Ditto house. The fort is maintained by a dedicated troop of volunteers and Civil War reenactors. Warning: the hill is steep, but well worth the trek up to the top level for the history and the views.

Very very pretty on the hill! Those who can't or don't want to walk may want to seek other areas....the walk up the hill is quite an effort, but WELL WORTH the exercise, the view is spectacular!Very historic area, easy to see why it was a fort location.Great place for a picnic, or an escape from the bustle!

Lots of hills--but that's what I was looking for. The trails were well-maintained. I enjoyed the historical spots--but the VIEWS were unbelievable! The wildflowers were even starting to bloom...beautiful.TIP: no restroom in the parking lot entrance but there is a spot up by the historic fort area.
