I recall when this brewery started, was one of the 1st to try their wares. Their OPA (Organic Pale Ale) is extraordinary. Classic hoppy, slight citrus pacific northwest IPA, but has more depth. No, I'm not a fine beer critic, I just drink what I like. Lived in Helena for 13 years, so I watched & drank their beers during their growth, and glad to see they've maintained the same quality from back then. Before the brewery added another floor and turned into a semi-yuppie-ish crowded scene, it was a mellow little place with weekly live Irish music and far more inter-personal. I returned a few years later, barely knew anyone and discovered it morphed upwards and outwards. Considering that the Helena Valley is 'Death Valley' for most businesses (seen more close shop & bail then new ones created & thrive), it's good to see a local business thrive over the years from scratch. Depending upon what social buzz you like, I'd adjust visiting this place to either avoid crowds or join the crowd. I can't stand crowds & places packed elbow to elbow (typical early evening hours are the worst at BB). Millers Crossing carries their beers next door, has TVs and pool tables, so if the brewery is packed (yuck), go 10 steps to the right and enjoy more peace/quiet.
I've been to numerous breweries across the state, and Blackfoot always baffles me. The beer is tasty for sure and they have many beers on tap, but the environment is always missing something. Don't get me wrong, it is usually crowded and fighting for seats is a fun game, but I'd rather have a game on and a more relaxed atmosphere then what is offered here.
My wife likes going here after being outside on a hot summer day. She says the beer is good,m the prices are reasonable and they always have a band playing. We enjoy the popcorn and atmosphere
We ordered a couple of beers (which were delicious). The place was very crowded. People saw us looking for a place to sit and invited us to sit with them. We had a great time - drank some great beer and made new friends! A great place to hang out.
If you're a fan of craft beer, this is a must visit. Friendly service, quality beer, and being surrounded by locals are the reasons I will be back when visiting Helena again.
The atmosphere is very cool and the beer is delicious!! This place is two stories with a bar area on both levels and they also have outside seating on the second level which was nice. My husband and I love trying out local breweries where ever we are visiting and this is one of the best we've ever tried. We stopped in on a Tuesday night and they had cool live music. The atmosphere is great, the beer is delicious and the service was great. If you are in Helena and want to try a great local brewery choose this one!!
Pretty good atmosphere, and friendly staff. It was a fun place to visit. It had a good selection of beers.
My friends and I always came here to hangout. Being from the East Coast, I was impressed with the brews. The amber pale ales and IPAs were a regular for me. Many people go here to socialize.
We spend our free time traveling around Montana looking for hot springs and good beer. We love this brew pub, return to it every time we are in Helena. The beer is always good, we had the scotch ale (my personal fav). The upstairs opens out onto the deck overlooking Helena and it was nice and full of afternoon relaxers, just like us. There is no food service at the Blackfoot, yet there is always free popcorn! There are tons of places to eat within walking distance. Next time you are in Helena, go find the Blackfoot...it is a favorite of ours!!
To all the folks who may come to visit Helena, your trip will not be complete without a visit to the best local brewery in town - and probably the state. The motto is, "real good beer made by real good people" which is a pretty perfect description of the brewery. For those who may equate a brewery with a bar please be aware that they are definitely not the same, especially Blackfoot. This is a place where you won't see sloppy drunks, rude or loud jerks, or creeps with lame pickup lines (all the pickup lines are witty and well-received.....). There are a lot of families who come here, especially with small children. Lots of popcorn for the kids. Of course the real reason you're going to swing by is for the beer. Frankly it's about the best in Montana (I put in the "about" to make room for other palates, personally I think it is the best). For an IPA you cannot go wrong with the Blackfoot IPA - it's primo. On the darker end try the Extreme Stout - again excellent. Blackfoot is a great success story of nice guys who turned a hobby into a thriving business. Nice servers, cool part of town, great beer, most people I know probably stop by 2-3 times a week - nuf said.
This is a favorite spot for after-work refreshment. They usually have a special beer on tap that is often awesome (last week's espresso infused Stout was divine).
If you come to Helena, you should come here. Its the local family-friendly hot spot where everyone comes after work to socialize and see friends. Enjoy a flight, or as a local about their favorite. I live here, and I go at least once a week. oh, and they donate a dollar per drink to a local charity on Monday nights.
This is a great place to sample a broad selection of tasty craft brews and hang out. We really enjoyed the sunny patio, friendly locals, welcoming kid friendly environment and staff (you guys rock - nothing but happy and helpful going on). The only brewery I've enjoyed more is St Arnold in Houston.
The atmosphere at Blackfoot River Brewing is similar to the atmosphere in an Irish Pub. It is a Community Place where families bring their children and most customers will easily strike up a conversation at the communal tables. Free popcorn, too.Community Mondays are a wonderful way to raise awareness of the diversity and needs of the Helena Community and beyond.
The Blackfoot River Brewing Co. has excellent beer, friendly staff and a fun atmosphere. They have growler specials twice a week, Community Monday that supports local non-for profits, music on Sunday's and other events that add to the enjoyment. My favorite beer is their Scottish Ale, but they have beer for all tastes. If you like cask conditioned beer, they open the first of two on Wednesdays.
