I've lived in both Bozeman and Billings for large chunks of time, and Carter's dominates both places (over 20 breweries between the 2 of them!). A striking thing about Carter's is their experimentation. Always tons of seasonals, usually something on cask, and their standbys are truly outstanding. Truly wish they'd develop a canning operation :). Both the Derailed and the Ghost Train (a bit more Belgian flavor) are among my favorite IPAs anywhere. Black Knight (Dark Knight) is also an excellent porter when it's around.

Carter's has the most diverse selection of rotating, hand-crafted beers anywhere in the region. On any given day there are 12 - 18 different beers on tap ranging from the hoppiest IPA's, to a variety of belgian's, bitters and sour beers, award-winning porters, and unique seasonal beers. You really won't find better beer anywhere in our area and there is something here for every beer drinker. Top it off with the best staff around, and you have a winning combination. Oh yeah, and they are open on Sundays. And they are downtown (which is always better than the suburban west-end). And kids are welcome! It doesn't get better!

Carter's is a newer brewery located in the trail yard which gives it additional character! The brewery has a wide variety of beers on tap, some better than others, but good none the less. The brewery has great potential and will be around for a long time I am sure!

TIP FOR OUT OF TOWNERS: Breweries in Montana close at 8pm and there is 3 drink limit per day. I found this out at Carter's, which was the third stop on my self serving pub crawl during my one night visit to Billings. This place ended being my favorite of the three stops. For a microbew, the place has a lot of selection. I'd say around twenty different on tap. The staff was awesome as where the locals. I chatted with both as I sat at the small bar and drank. Very cool layout too as the brewery is on one half, right out in the open and the serving area is in the other part. A definite stop for beer lovers.

Small space, with brewhouse and serving area together, nice touch.Good beers, well made and true to type. Nice outside seating too. Would definately go back.

Beer is unique and always good. not very big so all you get is a great beer no food. if you are looking for Bud Light this is not the place.

We tried six of the beers, including their signature ipa, and found all but one of the brews to be pretty underwhelming. The coconut porter was very nice. Otherwise, and this comes from a true hop-head, they seem to depend too much on hops without a complexity that balances and enhances the high ibu values. Great staff.

The tap room is spacious and very comfortable. The beer at Carter's is excellent, they have a great porter and red ale that I would recommend.

When we showed up we sat down at a table and the bartender never came over, apparently you have to go to the bar to order. A sign would have been nice for some one who is not from the area, since the place seemed to be full of locals. They did have nachos which were really good and I believe they were made by the bartender. The beer was good but just didn't have what I was looking for, we would stop back in here again as it appears they do a lot of seasonal brews.

Carter's produces arguably the best micro brewed beer in Billings (at least to my tastes). I usually get my groweler to go rather than drink at the taproom because it is dark and a bit cramped.

The seating is better here than other tap rooms, but still not a whole lot of room. However, I have never had to stand. You may not want to drink all three beers if you plan on checking out the other tap rooms in the area since you are downtown. These beers are more potent than you think.Bring cash.Don Luis food goes good after some microbrews.

Excellent selections of micro-brew and a fun atmosphere. This place takes grunge to a really cool level. The whole laid back, cluttered look really works for them. There are no servers, you have to walk up to the counter to get a beer, and the tables are long and meant to be shared with other patrons. They have popcorn in the corner for customers to munch on. All in all, this was probably my favorite place we visited while in Billings.

My buddy was visiting from out of town and heard about this place from someone else. I discouraged him, but we went anyway. The IPA is horrible and the Farmhouse Ale tasted like bleach. The last time I went in there (about a year and a half ago), I had a similar experience.

Laid back, funky place with character. great beers and a good place to meet the locals

Never have I been to a microbrewery with so many different beers on tap. It's not at all uncommon to see 15 or more different kinds of beer up on the board. There is the standard fare that every brewery has and a whole lot more. Lots of creative things like coconut porter, smoked weissebier, apricot sour, black IPAs, seems like something new and unique is always coming out. Nice laid back atmosphere and friendly knowledgable staff too.
