pocahontas exhibition mine and museum

There were many coal miners in my ancestry and I have heard many stories over the years so I am thankful to be able to take my grandchildren to this coal mine and go inside where we can get a feel of what mining was and is like. The ride into the mine is informative. The guides are full of information and interesting stories such as how the miners protected their drinking water; all they had was what they were able to carry inside with them. Other miners would try to steal their water if they ran out. Some miners with false teeth would put their teeth in their water cans to insure no one else would drink their water. People come from all over the eastern US to visit here. I was in one of the southern states recently and someone asked me where I was from. After learning I was from West Virginia, she asked, "have you been to the Exhibition Coal Mine in Beckley, WV?" She said that she and her sister had booked their vacation so that they could visit there. Be sure to bring a jacket if you are touring the mine.

Loved looking at all the rooms from way back when. Others enjoyed the ride inside the mine. Only downside is it's on a hill, but no problem if you can walk up and down the hill. Worth seeing!

they've had a roof fall or something like that and it is currently being repaired - i hope they get this fixed and open up soon. There is a new little restaurant next door too.

Get experience in going down into the coal mines to see how those men felt. Dress warmly and enjoy the views.
