berdine's five and dime

Visiting Berdine's each year has become a tradition since I was a little girl. My grandparents live in Harrisville, and our time with them invariably includes a pilgrimage to Berdine's. Toys, household goods, oddities… I slowly walk the wooden aisles and look at everything, grinning. Karen, who is like the fairy-godmother, welcomes my family and me like old friends each year. And, now it is my delight to introduce other small children to the wonders of Berdine's.I recommend anyone visiting North Bend State Park, or just passing on Hwy 50 to drive a few extra miles to stop in. You will start grinning, too.

They have household goods, decor, tools, toys, games, you name it! There's a candy counter with free samples, figurines, marionettes, puzzles, lots of interesting stuff. The prices are very reasonable.

Berdine's is located in Harrisville WV. It is reportedly the oldest five and dime in the country. It is hard to imagine how they could pack much more into this charming old store. There is a candy counter, kitchen gadgets, craft items, interesting pieces of WV glass--and many items you played with if you were a kid in the 60s. By walking into Berdine's Five and Dime, one literally walks back in time. Berdine's is America's oldest five and dime store. It has been serving Harrisville, West Virginia since 1908. There is a bulk candy case, stick candy, tin toys, musical toys, boxed greeting cards, glassware, puppets and marionettes, gadgets, cookie cutters, seasonal gifts, puzzles, hardware, soap and most anything else needed or unneeded!! There are so many items within this store it is unbelievable! There is so much to see; some very nice items and high quality candy. There is also a room with antiques. What a great find! One could spend quite a while in this unique store.We just happened to find a brochure for Berdine's while staying at North Bend State Park. We're so glad we found the store and were able to spend some time in Berdine's Five and Dime...what an experience!!
