Loved the crowd, the music was fun, the food good... a nice stop there. Space clean and well cared. The bottled beers are better than their drafts.
You gotta love the PURPLE FIDDLE in THOMAS. Stop in for a beer, go see a show, or just enjoy the hang while spending time in wonderful Thomas, WV.
Came to the Purple Fiddle 11 years ago on our first weekend away together when we had just started dating. Returned this weekend with our two kids! Still the same great atmosphere and music. Love the friendly people and great music. Watched a free lunchtime show this afternoon. A couple days ago we had dinner there and watched Cabinet do their soundcheck and run through a couple songs. Our two-year-old danced along. Unfortunately, we couldn't stay (two kids, one being two years old and all...). Can't wait to come back.Great beer selection! (Wish they'd up their food game, though. The Fiddle Platter is good, and the sandwiches are fine, but they could do better.)
My husband and I stopped here on our drive down to Florida. Thomas is a unique town and the purple fiddle is the perfect place to enjoy some good food, drinks and live blue grass music! We stayed in the guest house next door, a charming old house that added to the wv experience. We will be back in the summer!
Fantastic little bit of culture and funkyness in mountains of WV. Had a fabulous evening and can't wait to return. Great music, food and atmosphere.
We were taking a walking tour of Thomas, WV and everywhere we went we saw signs highlighting music at the Purple Fiddle. We stopped in at lunch-time when a band was playing for free. We were uncertain what to expect for lunch, but found a very diverse menu. My wife had a falafel sandwich that was very generous, and delicious (albeit spiced and textured differently than that to which we are accustomed). I chose a platter of hummus, feta cheese, pita, and olives. The hummus was excellent, and probably made on the premises. The serving was so large, we had them box half of it, and took it back to our hotel. The staff was very warm and hospitable. The band was very professional, and the volume was just perfect for the size of the restaurant and crowd.
Loved it! Loved it! Great wraps, ice cold beer and a variety of music. If ever in Thomas, WV be sure to stop in at the place and take in some true WV entertainment!
Purple Fiddle reminded me of Beatnik Days of my youth where we would gather and hear great music tucked in an old warehouse or small smoky bar, or in later years small hippie bars. Housed in the old DePollo General Store, in the small town of Thomas, WV, it has a marvelous, funky ambiance, live music about five nights a week that varies from blues, bluegrass, etc., Customers from young to old gather to tap their feet, enjoy a good variety of beer and eat delicious wraps and ice cream. There is an outdoor court with tables for smoking or enjoying the music. The place isn't fancy or big so if it is on a weekend you will want to arrive a little early to get a table. My husband and I were there during the week and it wasn't busy, but we listened to really good live bluegrass music. It is a fun funky place, and if you want to experience a true touch of down home WV, take in an evening at the Purple Fiddle in Thomas. It is a hidden treasure.
The most prolific music venue in the whole state... they bring quality touring acts week in and week out, much bigger names than a town the size of Thomas warrants. Atmosphere can vary greatly depending on who's playing, but always a great community hub, whether folks are quietly enjoying their beers or up on the dance floor. Food is good, (lots of veggie options, and the ice cream is excellent) but not the reason I love the joint like I do. A very special place with stellar entertainment.
A friend recommended that we buy tickets to see Steel Wheels. We were glad that we did. The "new-grass" music was terrific and the venue is relaxed and fun. We arrived early to eat dinner and secure a table prior to the 8:00 concert. We ordered the hummus, chips, pico, and tapenade as an appetizer. They were all flavorful. For our meal, my husband and I both had falafel which was not very tasty and the sandwiches had no sauce, were dry and difficult to eat. Do arrive early when there is a good band. Closer to the performance time, the line to order food or a beverage was the length of the restaurant. And I saw other guests who arrived early playing cards as they waited. By the time the music began the room was packed and while benches and extra chairs seemed to appear, there were quite a few people left standing in the back. I checked that there was a fee for this attraction which is not always the case. I see that some music is free as well. Our tickets were only $20ish, however, and were well worth the price. Despite the food errors, we had a great time and I would highly recommend it for a fun evening.
Loved the vibe, loved the music. Great space. The menu is pretty basic, I like a little more choice and a little "fancier" options.Vegetarians will be pleased with their offerings.
Since I live in the Garrett County/Allegany County MD area, this place is not very far away that it was doable in a weekend. I heard many great things about this place over the years and had to try it for myself. We went in November 2013 and wow, what a time we had. We picked the perfect weekend to go since they Hackensaw Boys were performing ($20 cover to get in) and they were awesome. It attached hundreds if people into this tiny place, but thats part of the atmosphere. Everyone was dancing and singing, simply having a great time.If you are a city person and do not have an open mind about places off the beaten path, this place is not for you. You have to go here with a open mind. It's a no thrills place that simply serves up great food, beer, and music....heck...what else can you ask for? They say it's kid friendly, but I wouldn't take a kid under the age of 12 to this place. It is more of an adult atmosphere at night time. During the day, could be a different story, but I have never been during the day, so can't vouch. They have a lot of micro-brew beers, more than I knew existed. That made me fall in love instantly. I am a huge fan of micro-beer, and they had it all! GO here, you won't be disappointed. People in WV are awesome and very friendly. They welcome you as if you're like family. Like I said earlier, be open minded and no be afraid to meet new people, and you'll have a great time at the Purple Fiddle!
We were on a climbing trip at Seneca, and on Saturday night we went to the Fiddle and had a great time. Super friendly service, simple high quality menu, excellent beer selection, and live music. Mama Corn, a Blue Grass band from Pennsylvania, was in that night and put on an energetic, fun, and talented performance. Next time we go back to WV, we will come back to this bar for sure. With the small cover charge for the band, food, and a ton-O-beer it was a good value.
You have to love the philosophy of the place...Live music, good beer, locally raised food, in a kid friedly atmosphere....To me it is a bar that serves some good food, serves is usually slow, but friendly. The music is top notch and you're ears won't be ringing when the music stops...I love it that children are welcome, they are the future of live music....
Husband and I visited Thomas for the first time this past weekend. We decided to grab some lunch here after walking all over town. The menu looked great and we loved the vibe. What wasn't so hot is that after we ordered and paid it literally took an hour for our sandwiches to come out. Turns out they only had one person cooking and he was the person also serving the food. The food was fine but it wasn't really worth the wait coupled with the cost. I might go back, but only if it's dead. We wanted to get on with our day long before our food arrived.
