Unlikely that such an idiosyncratic place would get funding these days so kudos o Long.A temple to Art Deco, it just impresses in every way as a historical but still in use building. One might think that the politicians could prefer a more technologically up to date place, who knows?
The current Capitol is, certainly, a major attraction, and for a good reason. Architecture is formidable, unusual for this type of the building. Certain elements of decor are very impressive inside. The view from the 27th floor is great, indeed.
It was a great capitol to visit. Make sure you go to the 27th floor of the capitol to see the view. Also look for the bullet hole from the shot out that killed Huey Long. This was an interesting history tour.
you can ride to the observation deck for free, and the attendants can share lots of great stories about the historical events that helped shape Louisiana and Baton Rouge in particular. You can't beat free!
This is a very unique looking Capitol building because it's 30 stories tall and actually looks more like an office building. There's a very good observation deck on the 27th floor offering views of the city and the Mississippi River. A lot of the building is closed to the public, but the senate and house chambers are open for viewing. This is a beautiful building with many types of marble on the inside and Art Deco engravings and statues on the outside.
This is a 34-story skyscraper in Art Deco style and you can go to the observation deck on the top floor to have a great view of Baton Rouge. In this building Huey Pierce Long was assassinated in this building and if you look closely you can still see some of the bullet holes in the wall. Please note that entrance is free, but there is a very strict security check upon entering.
Fun place to visit and learn about Louisiana history and politics. You are able to go to the top of the capital. There are places to walk along the levee nearby. There is also a museum nearby to visit.
The La. State Capitol is a blast. You can go up very high and walk around outside, where you can see for miles. Inside, there are many people who will assist you and give you historic information. Or you can just wander around on your own. When the house and senate are not in session, you can go in those chambers as well. Very well kept, and no admission fee.
Probably the highest point you can get in and around Baton Rouge. Try to pick a clear day with no breeze. Much of a wind and it it not pleasant at the top. Also, if it is winter I would find something else to do on a cold day unless you bring a heavy coat. View of the city and river cannot be beat.Walk the steps with granite from all the other states and labeled. Inside on a non legislative day there is much state history to see including the spot where Huey Long was shot down. All in all one of the more worthwhile attractions in the downtown area.
We haven't seen a lot of state capitol buildings but compared to the few we have seen this one is awesome. The lobby is great with all the marble and cast bronze doors, etc.. The view from the observation deck on the 27th floor overlooking the Mississippi River and Baton Rouge is great. The staff there is very friendly and informative. A must see if you are in the area.
Lance was a great tour guide. The unknown history is always fun to learn. He showed us the only bullet hole that wasn't covered up where former govenor Huey Long was shot. The piece of wood left from the 1970 bombing. How Baton Rouge got it's name & my favorite, the history of the song "You are My Sunshine". It was cold & windy the day we were there but it didn't stop us from going outside at the observation lever. Everybody should visit all the state capitols.
I've never seen another capitol building like this. It's super tall and there are almost no public accessible areas. We could walk around the lobby area - which is very elaborately decorated - but the gold-doored elevators aren't accessible - they go up to all the offices and you can only look into the house chambers if they're open. The grounds are impressive with a lot of gardens out front. The city is itself was almost desolate - there was hardly anyone walking around, even on a weekday afternoon, a little weird.
I am from Nebraska and got to finally visit the capital of Louisiana, which in some part is patterned after the state capital in Lincoln, Nebraska. It was lovely and we had a great view from the observation deck on the 27th floor.
First off the building itself is a nice site to see, from the moment you walk in you see the hallways adorned with marble and various statues all along the first floor, also be sure to visit the hallway where former governor Huey Long was shot, you can clearly see the bullet holes from the gun fight that day, then you make your way to the observation deck and enjoy a beautiful view of the city and the river (be aware that the observation deck closes @ 4 pm though). The day we went it was extremely windy up there but a clear day and you can see across the river and into the distance for miles, and this was all free! Recommend this to anyone.
It's free, easy, and doesn't take long. Worthy of the detour; park, and walk in. Captiol building is beautiful inside. Elevator ride up to the stop (16th floor I believe) Walking around on the balcony outside is kind of exciting if you're afraid of heights. Really cool view of the city, Tiger Stadium, the Mississippi, and all of Baton Rouge. Cool thing to do real quick I think.
