An excellent example of ship building in the United States in front of excellent example of a Shipyard now in ruins. This is a very well kept piece of navel history. Very easy self guided tour of the ship. When is class of cruiser was build it was state of the art.
Very worthwhile attraction to visit, especially for naval history buffs. You have access to a reasonable percentage of the ship and guns. If you've been to the USS New Jersey in Camden, NJ, the USS Salem is like a smaller version of that (gross oversimplification I know). While you're in the general area you could also check out Battleship Cove at Fall River to see the USS Massachussetts. Visited the ship with a 6 month old, was able to carry him around quite easily in a Baby Bjorn carrier while climbing up and down ladders. Overall condition of sections is a little run down (but hardly unexpected given funding challenges), so it pays to be a little careful with your footing.
We were given a personal guided tour of the ship by a former sailor on the USS Newport News, a sister ship to the Salem. This guy knew what he was talking about. We literally got take from stern to bow and learnt so much. This ship is in the most amazing untouched condition. It is a proper museum standing as it did when it was decomissioned. It is fascinating. We had a good two hours being shown around and can't wait to go round. The work these people do is an inspiration and will keep this wonderful old girl alive for many years to come. I said to our guide on leaving that I, as a wife, had come under some sufferance but actually found it one of the most fascinating things we did in Boston.
This was a hidden gem. You can tour the entire ship (USS Salem). It is easy to do a self-tour (lots of information) or does offer a guided tour. There is a memorial inside the museum (inside the ship) for WW II ships and sailors through 9-11. It is a great tribute to those who fought for our freedom. There is also a mini-golf course available, but definitely not worth the time.
