Visited Detour for a wine tasting with my girlfriend and was very pleasantly surprised with the facility, staff, and the wine. We sampled about 8 different wines and enjoyed nearly all of them. We're relatively new wine drinkers, but they were very helpful and friendly about it. The tasting room was modern, clean, and comfortable. The pricing for samples was very reasonable, and its nice that you pay and get tokens, and each wine costs a certain number of tokens - rather than one set sampling price for X number of wines (as many other wineries do). This way if you aren't sampling the expensive ice wines and ports, you aren't getting charged for them.

Went for tasting. Very nice. Enjoyed it and some good wine. Would like to come to some of the events.

We are local yokels, so have been observing the winery since it's birth. We do not drink, and are older, so we are not inclined to go to the festivals. Having said that, it has been fun to see the evolution of a promising venue. We were coming home one evening and saw a wedding reception in progress. Looked like a great place for such an event. Appeared to have a lovely ambience. We had obligations on July 6th, but made sure we were home in enough time to see the fireworks. Last year they were fantastic, and we were hoping for a repeat performance this year. There were a lot more people in attendance of the festival this year, and from what we could hear, the last band to play sounded great, and the feedback from the audience confirmed it. We sat in the back of our pickup truck, in our white patio chairs (hillabilly style), and waited patiently for the fireworks to begin. Wow. Wow. Wow. The Winery's fireworks were better than an municiple fireworks that we watched on the 4th. My suggestion for the Winery: Let local people (older ones like us, and ones with children) who can't do the day long festival, pay an evening fireworks admission. We will continue to plant ourselves somewhere by the roadside and watch, but would definitely pay if we could just come for the fireworks, and maybe an hour or so of music. Thank you for the display! We still love having you in the hood!

Had a GREAT time with family and friends on the 6th! The wine was great, the bands were AMAZING and the fireworks were better than any local show around! If you missed it, you really missed out!

Found out about this place at the Catoctin color fest, so we decided to take a ride down and check it out if you like sweet wine you will love Passion the tasting room is small but they are growing the pond by the woods and grape vines are very scenic

We visited on a weekday and I am sure on a weekend with more people there it would have been more fun. We tasted only the reds and I thought The Bonfire wine with cinnamon was very interesting. The Winery is young and has big plans. I would keep my eye on this one and maybe try again in a year or two. The Winery is surrounded by beautiful countryside and the drive is nice. No food or anything nearby until you get to closer to Woodsboro (at least on the south).

This past Saturday, Sept. 29, my fiancée and I (Travelzoo subscribers and customers) redeemed our Detour Winery (2) adult admission deal. The experience at Detour Winery was more than disappointing, it was infuriating. We spent over an hour traveling from Washington, DC to get to a place that was in no way, shape or form worth the time or money spent on travel, let alone the $25.00 we paid for the admission. Unorganized lines and crowds of people were everywhere, there was absolutely no organization and the staff at Detour Winery was extremely unhelpful and unable to provide any logistical support. While some people like us who waited in a line to redeem our coupon for more than half an hour, others simply parked their cars, walked up to a wine sampling station (of which there were only 2), asked for wine and were served without having paid. To reiterate, we witnessed people who paid nothing participating in the same (or better!) benefits we paid $25.00 for. Some were given small wine glasses after asking certain staff without paying. When I asked if we could get the same small wine glasses, we were told we had to pay $2.00 per glass. This was insult to injury because I expected to be provided with at least that for the $25.00 Travelzoo deal.

We tried this though a Travelzoo Local Deal. For $10, we received 15 tastings each, a tour and two glasses. The time we were there, we were the only tasters. The available wines included: - four red wines - four white wines - a blush - a white house - two ice wines - five fruit wines and - five dessert winesDetour Winery is family owned, built and operated. The tastings were conducted by the owner's daughter-in-law. She ensured that we tasted the wines in the order that would be best. We were impressed by the unusual variety of wines, and also some twists. My favorite was the Sauvignon Blanc, which was oaked aged. The Red Raspberry was also delicious. Our tour was conducted by Daniel Tamminga, the winery owner and vintner. They had just crushed grapes, which were fermenting in vats. There were also vats with grapes that been fermenting for a longer period. He showed us how he stirs the vats twice a day. It was fascinating to not only learn about the wine making process, but also the vision for the winery.

I live close to the winery and have watched it evolve over the past year. Went to the 4th of July festival out of curiosity. Sadly for the winery the temp went up to 102 that day. The owners let us come later in the day due to the heat, and didn't charge us admission. Thank you! The jazz music was great. The wine selection delicious. The atmosphere lovely. The highlight of the evening was the fireworks!! Best I've seen in a very long time. A lot more in the plans for this new destination. Visit the website to keep up with the schedule. Congrats Detour Winery! Love having you in the hood!
