Thoroughly enjoyed the live presentation of African dancing and singing. The dancers and singers were very talented. On party with any professional performance I've ever seen.
Impressive house with a history important for the city. Stuffed with old equipment we sometimes recognized from our past or stories of our (grand)parents from their past. Nice to hop in and have a look. Also very friendly personnel. Give my kind regards to Barbara at the reception if you visit La Periquera...
not a lot of artifacts displayed, or gifts to purchase. The Museum does have a great back story and even a love/tragic tale to it. It's ALWAYS open, very centric and close to many places where you can buy Cuban trinkets.
I'd like so much the romantic room where people can know about a romantic story. I didn't like that the place closed at noon until 01:30pm
The museum takes its name "LA PERIQUERA"="THE PAROT-CAGE" from the Cuban war of independence. The spanish soldiers in colorful costumes were like parrots in a cage to the Cuban independence fighters. The collection is small and there is room for improvement,in the capital Havana museums of of international standard, here in "el Oriente de Cuba" the feeling is more provincial.Holguin has 3 leafy squares(cuban :parque) south to north: "parque de las flores ,parque- central,parque-san Jose .Parque san Jose is the prettiest. The beaches on the" costa holguinera" are world class but Holguin is merely a nice change of scenery from the coast. The museum exhibits Taino art and colonial art.
If you have never seen the history of a city in one building, this is where to go...There is also a tunnel right underneath the building which keeps a love story...
...but there are not many Museums in this city. There was not much to see, but at least some history just to escape from the sun. The house it self is the only interesting thng to see there.
La Periquera is a national monument of Cuba and the Provincial Museum of Holguin. The central courtyard is the venue for many cultural events...dance, music, etc. Holguin has a fabulous cultural life but it is very poorly promoted. Accurate information about times and dates of events in the city are extremely difficult to find for a foreigner and much depends on word of mouth.
This local museum is a former Spanish Colonial army barracks during the wars of independence and it has an interesting history of its own. For a small tip it is possible to have a guided tour.. It is worth a short visit of you are spending some time if you walking around Parque Calixto Garcia in the center of town
