Just outside Chatham is the settlement of South Buxton where many of the slaves escaping from the States settled. Great people work the museum and are very passionate of the story they have to tell and the articles that you get to see. Whether you area real history buff or just want to learn more about the plight of the slaves this is the place to visit
Excellent area to visit. Very emotional history lesson on Black History of Canada. I will visit again.
A gem off the beaten path. If you're into history - especially history of slaves in US and Canada - it's a must-see. Tells the story of a little-known community that became a haven for runaway slaves.
This settlement once had a population of over 2000. You will learn that these escaped slaves were passionate about education, and their little school produced graduates who went on to become members of the professions on both sides of the border
I visit the museum at labour day very informative! Have alot of history about descendants that have come to Chatham-Kent. I have been going to North Buxton for over 50 years for the annual home-coming and I'm always impressed with the museum.
The contributions made by the inhabitants of the Elgin Settlement to the history of Canada and internationally, is inspiring and certainly deserves to shared enthusiastically by knowledgeable interpreters! The Buxton Historical Society appreciates your candid review, which alerted us to an area where improvements can be made for the visitor experience. The appropriate committees have been provided with these insights and are working actively to make sure that our Summer Students are better equipped to deal with the public. Thank you for helping us to improve!
The most touching tour I have ever taken. Many of the volunteers at the museum are descendants of the original settlers. It was a very personal glimpse into a community that influenced leaders in both America and Canada. This museum is well worth the drive.
