gulf of georgia cannery national historic site

Went with my 2 boys (5 & 8) and they had a great time. We all learned about canning, fisheries, immigration and technology. The Parks Canada guide Abigail was amazingly enthusiastic and my boys loved her 40 minute tour. Great value for money. Get there early to get the free 3hr parking.

Very nice piece of BC history. Very rustic area and very well kept.Located right on the water . Near good restaurants.

If you want to understand a bit more of the history of the region,this is a place you should visit. The admission is inexpensive and thereare some specific guided tours, but you can also visit by yourself as there arelot of signs, text and audio.

Interesting to see how dangerous it was to produce a can of tuna. The building was not heated at anytime and we were cold just walking inside. Hard to imaging how it was when it was an active factory, the smell and noise. We had a guide in a few places along the route, because a few persons were sick and they were short staffed. Great eating places just down the street, some with a look on the river

Every time I go to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery I see new things... it seems that they are always adding to the displays, which are informative, fun, and interactive. It's a great way to spend a few hours!

The Cannery gives you an excellent idea of what Richmond (mainly Steveston area) and the fishery was like in the 1800's and 1900's. It is also close to harbour boardwalk and many interesting shops along Moncton St.

A lot of history in the little village of Steveston! Start with the Museum itself and then continue y our walk down the boardwalk towards No. 1 Road, and continue east towards No. 2 Road. The walk itself is spectacular along the Fraser River, but be sure to take in the small cabins that have been restored by the Canneries, where the workers were housed. Antiques, photographs, and an idea of what life may have been like at that time.

Informative, great spot, enjoyed all it had to offer. Loved being able to walk around the boats and along the boardwalk.

As you have noted, due to the fact that our site is built on top of water, and being unable to be altered (with added insulation etc.) because of the building’s historic status, it does get quite chilly inside during the winter cold snaps. Thank you for your review! Yes, thankfully, the cannery 'smells' are no longer present inside our museum, but at times the ocean breeze (and working commercial fishing harbour next door) do bring in a nice whiff of authenticity to our site!

Did you know that Steveston was the biggest salmon processing village in the world at one time. This is a fascinating cannery museum with displays and videos that reenact the salmon canning process of the early 20th century Steveston

The Cannery was in operation for many years, providing the area with boat loads of fish for canning. It is now a historic site with original machinery and information on how the original cannery operated. Great retrospective on our history and those who worked long hours to supply us with our food from the sea.
