We had a great night out at the Theatre Royal, seeing CW Stoneking with friends last night. Good vibe, reasonable acoustics and a nice twist on drinks available for the bar, such as an Aperol Sprizter.Overall, we really enjoyed it but being a warm summer evening in Australia, the poor Ol' Royal was sagging in the heat and it was very stuffy and warm inside with no air conditioning to provide some relief. Worth a visit though if you get the chance, we were told that they drag old sofas into the stall for movie sessions. You feel like you have stepped back into the world your grandparents / great- grandparents walked through years ago!

This is apparently the oldest theatre on Australia's mainland and it's certaily very atmospheric. We had drinks here on a couple of occasions and it's a great spot to sit outside during the summer.

Can not fault the theatre Royal Castlemaine. Have attended 3 concerts here in the last couple of years . Julia Stone , Eskimo Joe and Josh Pyke. Huge names rockng the walls of this theatre . Tickets prices are fabulous . And after each gig the artist has stayed to sign autographs and have a chat to fans . Easy train ride from Bendigo and Melbourne . Make sure you sign up to their website for upcoming acts . And support this fabulous venue for how lucky we are to have it

This place was interesting, locals sipping beer, old and interesting feeling inside the foyer. They serve the best ice cream, and the staff were lovely. They need to ditch the table and chairs for weekends in the ice Cream shop. It was busy and a hindrance if anyone was seated the shop would be FULL. !!! And they show films. Go and enjoy.

Popped in for lunch whilst in the area on business. Not a huge range on the menu so settled for a toasted gourmet sandwich, lemon cheesecake and a coffee. It didn't knock me out but it was edible.

We had coffee and brunch and the service, food and drinks couldn't be faulted. Historic building is one of the gems of the Goldfields.

While some suburbs and towns allow old theatres and cinemas to moulder away, Castlemaine makes full and enthusiastic use of its theatre. Earlier reviews indicate the theatre's fabulous history. Currently the premises host everything from art-house films to bands and children's dance parties. While having coffee in the café at the front we watched a diverse array of people arrive, meet-up, enquire. Café staff were friendly but service was patchy (I had to re-order to get what I'd asked for). The entire building is in pretty shabby condition and would cost a lot to upgrade -- and perhaps the locals are content with it as it is.

Besides the films shown here, this Theatre helps keep live music going and it is utilised by many touring bands as a must use gig stop.

Dropped in to buy an ice cream after a disappointing meal elsewhere. The service was quick and friendly. The ice cream was very generous. Thankyou.

I have been to this venue a number of times, and have always enjoyed its quirkiness. It has a claim to be the longest running theatre in Australia, and it once was graced by the notorious Lola Montez, a well-known dancer and actress of the time. The theatre is a venue for many ecclectic events, such as the new year Bootlegger's Ball I attended last year, and the running of MET operas on the big screeen.I always enjoy my time at the Theatre Royal. There is also a cafe and Mexican restaurant at the venue.

What would life in the gold fields be like without the verve and excitement of a theatre. its Art Deco facade, now a cinema, gives it away. but its more than that. It has a continuously operated since 1855,making it the oldest in australia. Photos from the early days show how this grand lady was renovated at least three times. Its a beautiful structure with horseshoe balcony, deep arched proscentium and a very pretty flowery ceiling.
