This area is safe during the daytime, but guards at one end will thwart your entry as the sun goes down. This area is to the left of the famous steps. There is still a good deal of crime. That said, if you walk the trail just off of the Malecon, you can get a good sense of the buildings and architecture. Many of the buildings are historic, but never seem to be open. We finally found one gallery open after passing by it seven different times and days.If you are brave enough to climb the steps, don't cheat. Start from the street with the steps are numbered 1-8, before starting the ascent uphill. There are rest spots where you can sometimes find restaurants, shops and galleries open. Interestingly, eight former Ecuadorian presidents are from this area and Ernest Hemingway lived here also. Then again, it seems Hemingway slept around everywhere.

My friend and I were in Guayaquil for a long layover on our way back to the States and decided to venture out into the city for the afternoon. We headed to this area as other reviewers had suggested it as a good (and relatively safe) walking zone. Indeed it was - there was a pop up street market near one plaza (happened to be a Japanese anime festival of some kind - random!) and the many steps (numbered and in the hundreds) lead you up to a 360 degree vista complete with a small church, a lighthouse and a fake 1/2 pirate ship. If you have the time, walk around this area - there are plenty of bars and little shops to check out along the way.

This area of Santa Ana Hill used to be the seedy ghetto of Guayaquil, but has been turned into a colorful and unique area that now hails as a tourist attraction. The "regeneration" of the area maintains the charm of its historic past, while catering to the visitors. It is one of the oldest areas of Guayaquil, sitting on the banks of the Guayas River.Artists, handicrafters and their shops, and small cafes with local foods have cropped up everywhere. It helps that this is basically a waterfront neighbourhood! Hundreds of steps - all numbered - lead through interesting old colonial streets and paths. Museums and parks are nearby. A still-working lighthouse remains at the top of the hill. Definitely worth a look!

Try to visit this hilly neigbourhood for a couple of hours. The setting is verry nices, there are interesting shops and artists around and still has a lot of locals living around. Great views after walking the 444 steps to the phare. It's safe to visit if you stay on the main route uphill.

The walk around is not very long and it sometime feel like a tourist trap but it is a pleasant walk. Arriving at the top is particularly nice and the beautiful view is comprehensive and unexpected. Sunset from the top is strongly recommended

Beautiful street, colorfull houses. Not enough bars for a coffee or a cold drink. Safe enviremont. You have a good vieuw on the rivet.

If you're going to go visit Las Peñas during the day, you have to go up all the way to the top at least once. The views are the best in Guayaquil and it's beautiful up there. If you're going to go to have a few beers at night, it can be fun, but you have to be careful (as you always should be as a tourist in Guayaquil). Tourists are targeted, especially at night, so if you do decide to go, don't bring any valuables, credit/debit cards, and be careful about taking out your cell phone (especially any kind of smart phone). Just bring some cash that you need and if you can, leave your cell phone at home. It keeps you safer.

There are numbered steps(440 to the top). At the top walk up the stairs to the Lighthouse for a fantastic view!The colorful houses are beautiful.

Lots of nice little bars; Wednesday night theater or live music at Diva Nicotina. Also singers at various bars, and all the way up there is the light house. Peñas is where Guayaquil was founded (Cerro Santa Ana). The historic road Numa Pompilio Llona has beautiful historic wooden buildings from the beginning of the last century and part of Ecuador's monument heritage. Walking along this beautiful road, one reaches the new residences and offices at the North side of Peñas; Puerto Santa Ana, a luxurious area. Casa Pilsener is where once the old beer brewery stood. The entire area is very safe.

Well when they told me it was going to be 500 steps to get to the top of this historical, colonial, village, I had second thoughts, but walking along the beautiful river park and into the village, it was so quaint and lovely with old post lights and lovely flower gardens, we decided to try it. You can stop along the way and have a soda or beer in several little places and the "tourist police" are all along the area to make sure you do not wander off in any areas that may not be too friendly. It does not take long before we made it to the top and I am glad we did. There is a beautiful Chapel and military park and gardens and the view is spectacular. The City of Guayaquil has made great effort, to make this spot a lovely place for tourists to visit.

Beautiful place. Is a place where locals & tourist hang out. you find good food, bars & disco. as you get to the top there's a beautiful church. and you get to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the river and guayquil.

Walk up the 444 steps through a historic neighborhood of bright and pastel-colored buildings. Go early before the heat or late in the day when the bars and restaurants are open. Great views of the city and the river.

This is a place very beautiful, you can enjoy with many friends. I recommend visit for the afternoon (4 Pm) for you can see the perfect sunset. You should take a photo (Selfie haha ) behind the church to front the colored houses.

We went to the top on our two visits to Guayaquil. The first time we went up south side where the steps were not numbered. We came down the numbered route with the cafes and shops. We went up the town side the 2nd time.Areas with cobblestone streets and art deco type shops.At the top the Chapel and lighthouse also offer nice vistas of the city and insights as to the history of the area. Well worth the hike up all the stairs.
