Ideal for a cup of coffee (or better for a capuccino and a cornetto) whilst watching people passing by. A visit to the Duomo is a must.
The elephant statue is the centerpiece of the piazza - but the Duomo is the highlight. I hadn't realized when we were there that the elephant was made from lava.
..Only puzzled by the symbolic Elephant…in the evenings it resembles a bit Marrakesh, the crowds come for a stroll, while music is played, circus entertainers create a warm an amusing evening..
A large square in the centre of town. The buildings are black and white and made of lava stone. Unique and worth a visit. Town centre is compact for walking.., but we did notice the little tourist train in the square if you find walking is limited.
Catania is not a beautiful city, but the Piazza Duomo is a beautiful place. You'll see why it's a UNESCO World heritage site when you visit. The main site here is the Duomo Baroque Cathedral, dedicated to the city's Patron Saint, Agnes. Also, the elephant fountain is unique and very cute. Have lunch at a cafe and be sure to venture to the nearby fish market if you're there in the morning. One of the best markets we've visited anywhere.
Not a very big square but surely one very rich of important monuments. The Elephant in the center is the symbol of the city.
Perhaps architecturally not one of the greatest cathedrals, but nonetheless, not without interest, and where Vincenzo Bellini, son of Catania, is buried. Baroque buildings roundabout are all quite impressive as is the neighbouring piazza housing the university.
You can visit the Church, sit in the square, people watch, grab a coffee. This is just an awesome spot to chill, watch the world go by and enjoy the majesty of It all.
A Baroque square, at the end of the famous Via Etnea, dominated by Catania's Duomo, where many Catanese and foreign residents of all ages ad walks in life accumulate to walk, sit on the steps of the Elephant monument, have coffee, talk and relax, day and night. A lovely environment, beautifully lit, even when it rains lightly!
Nice open piazza with the Catania emblem -- the elephant fountain. Duomo worth the visit inside as well.
the piazza duomo is different from other duomo places in other italian cities but the combination of the duomo and other historical buildings, the large square and the fountain, makes this square quite an impressive combination. i saw it at night only
The Piazza Duomo is grand with limited vehicular traffic and is surrounded by wonderful picturesque structures. Catanians gather here in the evening to mingle and stroll.
Lovely setting, the church is beautiful and the grounds around add to the beauty. The Fontana is right there, the market around the corner, and the bistros have outdoor seating to let you have a coffee and a pastry as you look at the world buzzing around you.
We called into Catania on a cruise, we went on the hop on hop off bus for a tour around Catania and surrounding areas and when we arrived back to the port we decided to see a little bit more of the city. And we were impressed. The Piazzo Duomo is very impressive and well worth exploring and photographing. There are so many beautiful buildings to see.
