Lovely place, nice eats & Chatilly is beautiful but pricy.Great old style racecourse, saved from closure a few years ago. Racecourse & Chateau go together,,can't be missed on a visit t Chantilly.
great experience - spent 3 days here in June 2014 - plenty to see in Chantilly a gorgeous little village. The staff at the Hippodrome were friendly, helpful and welcoming. We had a great day -Prix de Diane Longines - booked in for Brunch - which was really all day eating and drinking - walk straight out to watch the races on the deck and grandstand on the most beautiful race course I have ever seen. Will definitely put on my list for my next trip - stayed in a beautiful chateau a few kilometres away - Chateau de Montvillargenne- had rented a car and drove from Paris centre - an interesting experience but I eventually got the hang of driving on the other side of the road - a day at this race course is a must - and don't forget to visit the stables and the castle which are both a good half day experience and well worth the entry fee - absolutely beautiful
Beautifully laid out and majestic in its elegance. In a setting and laid out for horses and racing when they were in the center of life and sport.
We were invited for a function in the hippodrome, and the staff did everything to make us welcome. They were very involved, served a delicious dinner and provided entertainment in the shape of a three-man jazz band. With a view over the race course (and no race on) we had a great time.
I have been to Chantilly 3 times, always for the Prix du Jockey club (French Derby) and have always had very enjoyable trips. It is about two and a half hours drive from Calais and there is free car parking on the course. The course is obviously very old as is the main grandstand. The place had a renovation some years ago but the stand still shows its age especially if you climb the many stairs up to the roof viewing areas. You will be rewarded with fantastic views of the course and Chantilly but I couldn't help wondering if some of the UK's most zealous H&S officials would even let people go up there due to its age and condition. The area around the parade ring is delightful and, if the sun is shining, it is a real pleasure to watch the horses parade here.Viewing the races is also very easy as the stand is mostly made up of unreserved free seating and even on derby day it is easy to get a good spot.Unlike English racecourses the opportunities to buy drinks on course are quite limited and the beer is expensive. There is talk of the Prix de l'arc de triomphe being run here if and when they redevelop Longchamp. It is hard to see how this track, as it stands, could manage the Arc day crowd unless they make it all ticket in which case I would say, get in quick. It would certainly need a lot of temporary facilities but if they got it right, I'd want to be there. If you have a chance to go for the Jockey Club or Prix de Diane I would highly recommend a visit.
I went racing at Chantilly and found the racecourse easy to get to. I arrived by train and the course is well signposted from the Railway Station including the distance. It was about a 15 minute walk along a wooded path to the course. I paid €3 for admittance and that included a sheet with the runners and form on it. The course has great views to the chateau and the stables on the back straight. I paid €7 for a hotdog and small bottle of wine which I consider to be good value. The racing was very good with decent sized fields and some close finishes. I would certainly recommend a visit to the Hipoodrome if you are in the area.
Since the refurbishment, the hippodrome is lovely. To enjoy it at its maximum, check the races and go in the upper part, enjoying at the same time the exitement of the races and the view on Chantilly.
