Thronateeska (Cherokee for place where flint is picked up from the ground) Heritage Center details the life from the early native period through today of life in the region. It is housed primarily in Albany, Georgia's grand old railroad depot. The adjacent railroad restaurant is used for public functions including President Clinton's campaign bid in his first run for the President. Also on the grounds you'll find a Planetarium and museum of American space travel. There is plenty to see in other outlying areas as well. The street leading up to the Heritage Center is the last remaining brick street in Albany.

This is a combination science/history museum. First, it was very difficult to find. When we finally did find it, the signage was very poor. We went into a building that I assumed was both the science and history museum. It all appeared science oriented and geared towards younger children. I never saw the history exhibits and just assumed that it was just not what I was expecting. We went outside to the train exhibit and found it disappointing. To get to the trains you had to walk past an overgrown grassy area and what looked to be an area for discarded junk. You are allowed to go inside one of the cars which has a model train exhibit running but only on Saturdays. It was neat to see but the man who let us in, was oddly quiet and offered no information on the exhibit or the rail car. There was no signage on the rail car or any of the other equipment as well. We went back inside and went to a showing at the planetarium. There is a small charge for this but unless you are really, really interested in science I would not suggest you go. The show we saw was not very interesting and I hate to admit it, but I dozed off. It also had very uncomfortable seating. Every planetarium I have been to has always had high seat backs so you could rest your head while looking up. These did not. After leaving and looking at their web site once we got home, I now realize that the history exhibits must have been in another building. This is very disappointing to me that we missed it but I guess it is understandable given the poor signage. I would say that this center is a diamond in the rough that needs a lot of polishing.
