This is one of those, tucked away, slightly hidden gems that are so fun to find. The building has an interesting historic story and their wine is very good. They have several very good red blends and I enjoyed their red and white varietals as well. They have live music every Tuesday night and outside during the summers. If you live in the area, I would check out their wine growlers, it's a pretty good value for good wine. Absolutely worth a visit!
Since we had parked our car here to ride the train, we decided to stop in for a tasting. Lots of fun conversation and delicious wines. I bought a bottle or Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris as gifts for our house sitter, but wish now that I'd bought some for myself, too.
You would be hard pressed to find a better place to visit in the Columbia River Gorge. We visited on a Friday evening when two bands were playing in the Ruins. I've seen music in many places - historic Chicago theaters, Alpine Valley, Wisconsin barns. The Ruins is one of the most unique and incredible settings for music. Add in some very good tasting wine (or beer - like all things Oregon there are good local brews on tap) and a beautiful, historic setting and you have the makings of a great night. Other than recommending a visit, especially if music is playing, I suggest purchasing tickets in advance and bring your dancin' shoes. The crowd may be slightly older, but the dancing floor gets crowded.
The staff was very friendly and informative about the wine. You are able to choose six and the cost is only $5. I was with a friend who doesn't usually like whites, but she liked two of the three, and we both liked the reds (particularly the blend).
It was fun to taste wines on tap. The person serving us was the owner's father. He was very knowledgeable and friendly. The back patio area ("ruins") is cool.
We like the ability to refill decanters (European style) and the appetizers offered at tasting. The wines we tasted are a bit young--need to grow or open up over days.
We were here on a beautiful Sunday with a total of 4 couples , the wait staff was wonderful . We all did tastings --- a great example of Columbia River wine. The room is large, they do live music and also have some local beers on tap, a great combo. The owner joined our party , a most enjoyable host. They are also selling refilable wine bottles, they hold a few ounzes more than the average bottle, a great idea that has been too slow to come to this country--all in all if you can only make one or 2 winery stops, you`ll want to make this one.
I look forward to events here. There is some magic in the air. Really special place to hang out and enjoy the locals, great food by Solstice and the wine is superb
