The museum is located near the library and is in a house that has been preserved. It is so easy to imagine how Los Altos used to be when standing on the front porch. The small museum that is next to it is a real little gem that chronicles Los Alos. It is beautifully run.
I have lived in Los Altos for years and finally decided to visit the LA History Museum. It was a real trip back in time and fun to linger and hear great stories of years gone by in this sleepy little town.
fantastic exhibits staged by dedicated, knowledgeable volunteers and staff rotating quarterly or so. the space is used for weddings also so the grounds are just picture perfect. definitely worth a stop by if in Los Altos.
Los Altos History Museum is an excellent local museum. It is also free, although donations are accepted. The volunteers there are so nice and very helpful and informative. When I was there they had an excellent bicycle exhibit on the first floor with all types of bikes and also stories on local biking sports heroes. This is a rotational exhibit so it will change in the future.Their permanent collection is on the 2nd floor. On the 2nd floor they have historic layouts of Los Altos, information on the railroad, Ohlone Indian, and a "Los Altos Famous People" exhibit. They also have an exhibit on how the areas has changed from agricultural to being a technology focused city. There is an silicon wafer to see there as well.In terms of local museums category I have rated it very good. It is near the civic center and there is park/library nearby as well. As such, one can plan a picnic before or after or go to downtown Los Altos a block or so away.Parking is free and I found a spot a few steps away from the museum door. There is an elevator in the museum - it is two story - so it is accessible to all. There is also a store with local books and gifts for sell. Very nice for a museum this size. It will take less than an hour to see it.
I grew up in Los Altos, and have visited their museum. I gives you a good idea of the growth the town has been through. I especially liked the model of the town's streets from the earlier days before it became incorporated, they brought back fond memories of growing up in Los Altos. My mother has contributed so much to the Los Altos History House, if you would like to hear her stories of growing up in the Los Altos / Mountain View area Google "Ruth Erichsen" and enjoy--she's a wonderful story teller. She will tell you about the days when horses were herded down El Camino Real by a horse farmer named Loucks, one of the town's streets carries his name.Their gift shop has some unique items for sale, something for every
Nice, local museum. Great changing exhibits. The Wallace Stegner exhibit was amazing. It was so well conceived, and executed. For a very small museum they captured the heart and essence of this man. Great job!
we paid this place a visit a couple of times now. It is a good summary of the Los Altos history. Very small cute place, if you want to get a crash course about the town and the culture this is the place... we first visited this place before we were going to move in to here...
