Beautiful road to travel and the area was beautiful as well! The Dam was beautiful old architecture and we found a wonderful bridge to cross. Took a break by the old locomotive where we enjoyed delicious ice cream on a warm day.
Once again he peacefulness we found in July was unexpected. The dam left a nice lake there too bad the fish do not think so. It was a nice quiet time just to take in the sights of the mountains, the dam, the lake and surrounding area.
further up to the diablo lake overlook, we stopped at a road side point from where the side road leads to the resort. The bridge is really good on the lake.
hike on trails overlooking Skagit river = ross lake. the hikes were scenic and fun. Not very crowded
At mile post 134, right before where they close the highway for the winter, is the trailhead to get you down to Ross Dam. It is a 500 foot drop in about a mile down which makes for a challenge on the way back up. At the bottom on the gravel road, follow the signs to left and you'll find yourself walking across Ross Dam. What great views from both sides of the dam. The Ross Lake side has snow covered peaks and the river side has those as well. The river side has great views of the gorge the Skagit River goes through to get to Diablo Lake. I could barely make out where out tour boat was a couple of days before. As I started to head back, I noticed the bottom of a waterfall on the Ross Lake side. The trail does go on beyond the dam. I tried getting a better view of the falls from there, but I couldn't. Ross Dam is the highest of the 3 dams and there are some decent views of it from the trail going down. If you don't mind the climb down and back up, this is a worthwhile outing.
