Just back from a Bald Head Island trip with good friends. Chartered a 3/4 day trip with Paul and first mate Jeremy at the last minute. Paul was very accommodating to our requested late start and strived to make the trip as fun, educational, and exciting as possible. Although the fish were not cooperating, the team did everything they could to find fish including fishing with live bait. Not often do you find a such service. Our next trip to BHI will definitely include another fishing trip with the Impulsive.
I highly recommend Impulsive Charters. The boat is outfitted with everything needed for a great offshore fishing experience. This captain knows the spots to fish and works very hard to make sure everyone has a great time. There are other boats in the area available for hire but when I return to Southport, this is the boat I will fish on again and again!
I are writing to you to warn you about both consumer safety and environmental issues with Impulsive Charters, in Southport and Bald Head Island, NC, based on my families recent experiences deep-sea fishing charter. We had not planned on posting our experiences until we received an extremely negative and rude email from Impulsive Charters and realized they would not make any attempt to improve the experiences for others. Our initial communications with Captain Paul were very cordial; however, when our family of 7 met Captain Paul on September 6, 2010, we found out that only 6 passengers were allowed per Coast Guard and realized that no first mate would be present. We informed Captain Paul that we had never heard this before, and he mentioned that it was on his website and was also sent in several emails to us. You can find a Southport deep sea fishing charter with this information clearly on their website at: http://www.yeahrightcharters.com/. With no internet connection, we could not verify this at the time but after further investigation when we returned, we discovered neither of these to be true. Captain Paul informed us that his wife had told him that only 4 family members would be coming; however, when we reached his wife via his cell phone, she stated that she didn’t know the number and had told Paul that the prior evening. It was at this time that we realized that all prior email communication actually came from Paul’s wife, Jeanne.Captain Paul offered to cancel the trip and refund our money, but our family had traveled several hours for this trip and it would be very difficult for us to reschedule. This trip was a birthday present for my father, and we didn’t want to wait too much longer to celebrate. After much discussion, one of our family members agreed to stay behind. This was very unfortunate, as this special trip had been planned for many months. Captain Paul then quickly started the boat, and we were off with no introduction or welcome, no safety instructions, and no familiarization with the boat itself. Two concerns of note for our trip: 1) we were never provided any information on where the life preservers were nor were there any marked in clear site and 2) Captain Paul was seen throwing plastic bait bag material into the ocean. We have since shared these concerns with the local U.S. Coast Guard office in Oak Island for follow-up.Upon arrival back in Southport, Captain Paul required full payment for the trip which we provided. When we returned and realized that there was neither a mention of the 6-passenger limit on their website nor mention of it in any email from Jeanne, we wrote Impulsive Charters and asked for a refund. We were pleased to get a note back from them and a refund of one person’s fee. When we wrote an email to them thanking them for the refund and sharing our two concerns, they responded with a very short, rude, and condescending email. Not only do we feel this was an inappropriate way to treat customers, we are concerned that Impulsive Charters will not make any changes in their safety or environmental habits and both people and our environment are at risk.We will not recommend Impulsive Charters, also found at www.baldheadisalandcharters.com and encourage all consumers to look at other charters in the area like Yeah Right Charters which can be found at: http://www.yeahrightcharters.com/ . Yeah Right lists what type of fish can be caught when, provides detailed logs of all trips, and CLEARLY indicates the maximum number
