This house is used by silver-spooned, country club, white male co-eds to lure girls under legal drinking age to see the secrets of this joke called Gimghoul Castle in hopes to hook up with them. A black eye in NC history, truly despicable stuff here. It is truly a Legend in its own mind. Avoid!
Breathtaking from the outside, but that's all you'll ever see. There are urban legends of it being haunted but it's really just fun to run by when you're out for a jog.
Beautiful castle and worth seeing but if you're not purposefully looking for it, you won't find it. The castle is on a dirt loop in the woods at the end of Gimghoul Road. It looks more like a driveway but is a public road. It's on private property and well secured but you can get close enough on the road for some great photos. I would love a tour inside but know that will never happen. Read about the Legend of Gimghoul Castle before you go and your visit will be more exciting. You may even see Peter Dromgoole lurking about...
the students of the university found the castle and created their headquarters. it is a private grounds and facility. the property is limited but the strange happenings and duels of the women and ghost stretches your imagination . the students till this day have private meetings respecting the 1889 headquarters. the interesting signs discussing the no parking. there are signs about walking trails (rumor has)that part of the BATTLE PARK system. the written material is well worth the curiosity.
The Order of Gimghoul ( a secret society founded by students of the University of North Carolina) was founded in 1889 and after 1920 they started using the castle as their headquarters. It's not open to the public (and no trespassing signs are posted all over the place) but it is on a public road so you can drive to the end and park to look at the castle (the road turns into a dirt road). Be sure to read the history of duels over women and ghosts before you go to see it. There appears to be a walking trail in back of the castle that may be part of the Battle Park trail system but I don't know for sure.
