A little jewel of a surprise in Sunset Beach. Cute gift shop too. We went for the rock light shows and while the images were limited it was a great way to spend a summer evening.
A small planetarium near the beach next to a shopping center and condos? Sure! Honestly, I would have loved the story of how this thing came to be where it is. Until then, I'm happy just knowing it did. Reasonably priced, with a large interactive play room attached, the planetarium puts on everything from movies, to laser light shows, and the standard star gazing show. We saw Back to the Moon for Good, followed by a brief tour through our solar system. The experience was wonderful. The place was not packed, the prices were very reasonable, and the staff was extremely knowledgeable and courteous. Remember to choose the show you want wisely. If you're not too excited about a Pink Floyd laser light show, maybe don't go to that one. Pick correctly, go expecting to fully open your eyes, and you'll have a good time. Also, make sure you arrive early and take full advantage of the excellent interactive play room directly across from the theater. Quick tip: The Museum of Coastal Carolina has a partnership with the planetarium and a receipt from one will get a $1 discount per person at the other.
Excellent for grandkids. I would have given it a higher rating however some of the displays were dated.
Not many small communities have a benefit of a Planetarium as Sunset Beach. Go with children or to an adult session. You will not be disappointed
This is a small planetarium. looks brand new. Seats about 30 people and about 15 with a good view. 9always sit in the back.) The science hall is actually very informative. HOWEVER, when you look at the schedule, there is a show at say 3:00, 4:00 5:00 etc, and they are all different. So I thought that paying 8.00 would, like at many planetariums, give you access. Especially since I have never been to a non NYC planetarium that was anywhere near sold out. Usually about 10 - 155 full. But no. The 8.00 admission covers full visit to the science hall (about 1400 sq ft. but only ONE show. It is not clear on the website that this is the case. For that reason, spending 21.00 to see the three shows is a bit much. When I was there there were 6 people in the show and the next show had 4. The show on Alien Planets was well done. the speaker introducing the night and the Alien Planets only made one mis-statement and it was not critical.
The stars above are a jumble and finding those pesky constellations difficult. Here's a chance to learn how to find them, if you want, and at the same time discover in what a wonderful universe we live. A variety of programs so you can go several times and not see the same thing.
If you catch the 11:00 half price showing, you get your money's worth otherwise it's just so - so. Show about the constellations was not real easy to see on the overhead screen and too much intended comedy effects fell short.
Came here on a rainy day with 4 kids. They had a neat waiting area with lots of science related activities to do/look at. The staff was extremely friendly, and helpful. The show was cool, and informative. My 7 year old loved it. I would go back.
We spent a couple hours here viewing the sea monsters show and playing in the hands on exhibits. The exhibits are free and probably more engaging then the show itself which cost us right under $30 to view. It was about 45 minutes and didn't include any star showing. Think National geographic style projected on the ceiling. They do have a half price cartoon at the 11 am showing that includes stars and a story line about mythology and naming of the constellations. Overall a good couple hours for the kids.
Read about this place as I googled fun things to do with kids in North Myrtle Beach. We were a short drive from Sunset Beach. I took my 4 children and my two nephews ranging in age from 4 - 16. My dad came along too. We all enjoyed it very much. We saw the first show which is half price. It kept everyone's attention. The science hall was a hit with the smaller kids. The free sea turtle show at noon was the favorite!! It was a great outing! They even honored us as military with a discount!
Arrived to watch a show on Pangea. The waiting room was more kid-friendly, still interesting in some areas. I assumed the movie we would watch would be a documentary type of movie. Instead it was a cartoon, not as enjoyable and I learned the same material I learned in elementary school about Pangea. Nice staff, and clean place though. However, nit as good as I assumed it would be. Not too many star shows. Just a different type of movie theatre in a nutshell.
The planetarium show could have been viewed as a DVD at home. An animated dinosaur movie. What happened to planetariums being used to learn about the stars? The rest of their exhibits are 100% for kids participation....so it's a great spot to take kids to learn with hands on.
This attraction appears to be completely out of place in a beach community, but its, location is entirely in keeping with its' purpose and goals. This is a very professional planetarium, far beyond what one would expect in such a beach and vacation oriented location. In a very few short years this planetarium has developed a varied program which would make a big-city proud.Visiting with a group of senior citizens the program selected for our viewing did a great job of comparing the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World with the discoveries, in the stars, of the 7 Wonders of the Modern World. The theatre is equipped with very comfortable reclining seats, allowing everyone to have an enjoyable time viewing the program.Usually the program is complete with the main event and followed by a live presentation with a very knowledgeable staff member.Truly, 6 to 60+ will be entertained and educated by the many programs available for viewing. And after a visit to this planetarium you should actually go over the bridge onto the beach to visit the sister facility, the Museum of the Coastal Carolinas. Each facility has a small, but appropriate, gift shop. Be sure to visit.
Our son loves science so this was right up his alley. He and my husband experienced the wind tunnel (pretty cool). He was also able to learn about electricity and magnetism. The staff is accomodating to military; active duty military gets in free! The dome was "pretty cool" as stated by my six year old. He was actually paying attention because now he is quick to point out the constellation! Nice outting.
We attended on a whim. . . After walking on Sunset Beach, NC... So glad we did...We were the only ones there (off season). They did the show for us. We went to the 1 PM show "Undiscovered Worlds" . 50 minutes long, lean back in your chair, awesome above screen round video... and then he did a extra, real person verbal, with extra information about what has happened in space since the film was done.zoomed into where things were going on...It's like an upside down Google earth looking out to space...It's $8.00 per person . Off season hours are Thur-Sat shows 1-4 pm on the hour.
