Great place to visit to learn things. Wish they didnt charge to get in but its still a great place Ive been going here since I was little
It's tucked in behind the city pool. They have several weekends that they reenact the lifestyle of that time period. It also has some history of Spencer Co tucked into the museum.
This is a small community run museum. It's in the city park, behind the pool. For what it is, it's worth seeing. The museum, was built in 1936 by the WPA. The have a really nice but, small collection of historical artifacts. The village is a little run down but, is an excellent example of early american frontier life.
Very interesting. Both the museum and the "village" are well worth the time. It only takes an hour or two.
Being a Lincoln enthusiast, I had to check this out! I give 4 stars to the museum alone. There are many artifacts dating back to the Lincoln era. Few items had a connection to the Lincoln's; yet there were a number of items belonging to friends and neighbors of the Thomas Lincoln family. If you know Lincoln Indiana history the name Gentry will mean something. There are several items belonging to the James Gentry family: some cookware and a rocking chair stand out. There are also some photos of the Gentry family as well as other photos of people living in Spencer County in the early 1800's. A large cabinet built by Thomas Lincoln is on display and was given to the museum. The gift of the cabinet is well documented. The museum was worth my time and I thoroughly enjoyed viewing the vast assortment of artifacts. The village consisting of log cabins that had been dis-assembled and put back together came from various places in Indiana. There are no cabins that had to do with the Lincoln's but were supposed to give an idea of the kinds of dwellings early settlers lived in. Sadly, many of the structures are in dis-repair and I imagine are in danger of one day falling down. Funding this project is probably a huge factor and it seems a shame to think that the village might be endangered. I truly hope that the museum can continue to survive and that more people will be interested in what it has to share.
I really enjoyed this stop. I wasn't expecting much though considering it isn't a National Park. It's true that this place is nothing fancy, FYI it's cash only so if you show up without cash, you will have to move along or venture off to an ATM in town. It's $5 for adults but a bit cheaper for seniors or kids. If you are a Lincoln fan or if you care about history, then it's worth a stop. They have a few unique pieces like a piece of furniture that AL built with his dad and an old walnut rail that Lincoln split himself, along with some other interesting historical pieces from around the same time period and later. The best part is the log cabin village. They are not located in their original locations obviously but having them together allows you to see them all in one location fairly quickly. Overall, I thought the cabins were in great shape and it was interesting to take a step back in time.
We have visted the Lincoln Pioneer Village several times over the years and the Friends of the Village are working on improving it every year. Nice little museum and worth the visit.
It's is a great little place to go. It's in the city park by the pool.It tell of Abe Lincoln and his time growing up here. It has cabins that have been restored to the correct time period. They also have weekends that people come and reenact how things were done. They also have some local history. It's one of those places that you grow up with & don't realize the treasure in your own backyard till you go off and can't find it else where.
