Though the Library of Congress doesn't own every book ever published, it...

I heard that the Library of Congress, started with Thomas Jefferson's own personal library, was very nice but I wasn't prepared for what I saw. I could've spent several days there perusing through the stacks of historical documents. The architecture is spectacular and beautiful from any angle. I thought for a moment that I was in Florence when I viewed panoramically the main hall and library-it was that spectacular. This is a great building both inside and out and should be part of any tourist's visit to DC. It could require as little as 1 hour for a general overall view or take up to 3-4 hours if one is inclined to visit the historical documents in the main library. The history of the building is fascinating in its own right, contains an integral part of American history, and should be visited by all interested in learning about American History. Not to be missed!!

Documents I had requested were readily available and facilities for scanning, copying etc. were very good, with helpful staff at hand for any queries.

The interior of the building is gorgeous. It reminds me of some European palaces. You can't enter the main reading room but you can see it from an overlooking balcony. However the balcony is surrounded by glass, making it hard to get a nice picture, but it's still beautiful. There are free tours but we didn't take one due to some in our group not speaking English. We only spent about an 1.5 hours inside but it was worth it.

Write your congressman & book a constituent tour (it's free and you don't even have to have voted for him/her). Then go. And go again. This is easily the most beautiful building in DC. Go! And the facts and stats about the LOC are staggering. Go! And the books-well get a LOC reader card and earn your Ubernerd badge by actually reading a book there! Who knew you could do that?!?!?!

Muck_Fichigan

You can tour alone in less than 2 hours and still and enjoy. Add it to your Smithsonian itinerary or capitol excursion. The best built and most beautifully presented building in Washington. I WILL go again.
