I drove approximately 9 hours from Nashville, TN to visit the Flyways Waterfowl Museum. I was certainly not disappointed! The owner is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about waterfowl. The museum is professional and well-organized and how a surprising amount to offer the would-be guest. The only museum of its kind featuring waterfowl history, environmental protection/awareness, and masterful taxidermy; if you are in the Madison (Baraboo) area of Wisconsin, do yourself a favor and stop by. A fantastic gem in a relatively remote location. Also offers educational videos and an arcade game which is genuinely fun and highly accurate.
My kids have hatched, raised and released mallards the last two years, and so they have become real duck enthusiasts. While camping in Devil's Lake state park this summer my son and I came across the Flyways Waterfowl Museum, so of course we had to stop. The museum was great and the proprietors/curators were very nice and knowledgeable (they also raise ducks). The museum does a nice job of being balanced and fair re. the conservation of wetlands/waterfowl and the impact of hunters - both as active sportsmen but also as invested conservationists (for example through organizations like Ducks Unlimited and the purchase of duck stamps, which support conservation efforts). The museum has a variety of educational displays representing diverse duck species and also has a nice collection of winning duck stamp paintings and prints from Wisconsin and neighboring states. Stop in if you can!
We stopped here on our way "up north." The museum is small, but very well done. Proprietor was very friendly and helpful (we were the only visitors at the time). The museum website pretty well shows what is there.
