If you are going to the park for the beach you should take a pass. The beach is a very narrow strip of sand that is best accessed from the water rather than the land. While the beach is a congregating spot for pwoer boats on summer weekends, the beach in Lake Geneva is a much better spot for enjoying the lake.
We did not go here to camp, so I can't speak to the facilities, although the park in general is very clean. We visited at the end of October, and lucky for us, it was at the peak of fall color. The colors were quite spectacular. There are some nice little hiking trails in the park, nothing strenuous. There is a little lake at the front of the park that faces Lake Geneva. I can imagine that this would be a good park to take the kids.
We hit this state park on a road trip to see the state parks surrounding the Chicago area. This park was a let down. The campsite was not flat, the beach was a thin strip of sand for which you had to cross a busy road, and the hiking trails were just blazed through brush. Would give it a miss next time around. I don't think there is much in Lake Geneva for those who don't have the money to throw at luxurious accomodations or a private boat.
The park is very nice, campsites are great with lots of tress, very well taken care of. It is great for kids because of the big spaces and playground the park offers. The beach (which has a very small sandy area) is right at the exit of the park, super close you can walk there. The lake is beautiful, clean and wavy. Downtown is close and it is a nice place to go for a walk or sit outside and have a drink, or something to eat. We went on memorial day weekend and I really felt like I was in a real beach vacationing! People walking on the streets with swimwear, carrying kayaks, paddle boards, etc. You can rent almost anything that can go in water, there. The one only complaint will be the bathrooms at the park. They had pits which can very very smelly and dirty. The good thing is that right now they are building very nice showers and new bathrooms!! This is a park I would definitely come back to. I have camped in several state parks in Wisconsin and this experience was one of the best.
My boyfriend and I stayed at Big Foot Beach State Park in July 2014 and were extremely disappointed. At the time they were building a new shower house so they had a trailer with showers instead- which is fine; however, the showers were very dirty and I felt I needed a shower AFTER taking one! I was expecting clean conditions since the outside of the trailer said "5 star cleanliness". They also had one outhouse for roughly 40 camping sites- that's 1 toilet. I have nothing against outhouses and am not easily grossed out, but this one made me gag.The beach is not really a beach. It is a sand strip that is about 5 feet deep (from the road to water) and maybe 50 yards long. There are weeds washed up on it as well. The swimming area also does not go deeper than about 3 feet.We booked this trip with the intention of staying at the campground all weekend and enjoying the beach & activities, but there were none.
We decided to camp at the park for a Friday and Saturday night. We got to the park and went to our campsite. Our site was pretty decent sized, but most of them were quite small. The shower house was being built so there was a trailer showers in it. The side of the trailer said it was clean / air conditioned, etc. Completely the opposite, they were disgusting. The outhouses were disgusting. Yes, it is a vault toilet, but still! Disgusting! The beach is tiny, so get there early to mark your claim. There is no alcohol allowed in the park. So plan some accordingly.
We stayed here in Aug. 2014. All of the typical state park rules and fee's were consistent. The campgrounds seems small, but it served it's purpose for us. We were hanging out outside of the campgrounds all weekend so we pretty much just slept there and hung by a fire in the evening. We had a pop-up and a 26ft 5th wheel camper. I could see it being a "tight fit" with some of the sights, but the ones we had 80/82 were plenty big so there was no problems. The camp was quite in general too.The fishing pond on sight was not good, but the kids had fun for an hour or so. Tons of room for picnics and volleyball or Frisbee. Nice playground too, although a pretty good hike from the sights. If you are planning on swimming you probably wont like the beach much. It is real small. It would get a little better review if the showers were finished, but I assume they will be next year.Overall if you are looking for the campgrounds to entertain you then you will most likely be disappointed in this one.
This was a very popular place for all the weekend warriors to hand out with their friends and families. Was a very nice and clean park. easy to get around but very crowded.
Maybe the smallest beach I have ever seen as we drove right by it and almost hit folks on the beach, crazy setup they have at this road-side beach off the lake...
The location is great but the only issue is it is very small in size. One of the smallest state park I have ever visited. So it is obvious that in weekends it will be very crowdy and the privacy will be less. Park attendants were helpful and the park also has access to lake Geneva though very small beach. But still we liked it and will probably camp again but definitely on weekdays ;)
I read pretty much negative reviews of this camp and also the weekend of the triathlon so I didn't have high expectations. I was pleasantly surprised. We were in tent site #30 and were RIGHT by one of the driving paths. (this is a GREAT site if you want to cheer on the athletes as they run by). The host camper was right across from us and did a good job of keeping any noisy neighbors quiet after 11pm. I wish there was a bit more brush/foliage between camp sites. The new bathroom/shower facility is under construction and I was worried the pit toilets would be smelly. Nope, they were really ok! Firewood was $6 a bundle or 3 for $15. Kindling was $3 a bundle and ice was available for purchase as well. You can walk to downtown (almost a 3 mile walk from the tent area) by taking the Lakeshore path (very scenic). The "beach" doesn't have much to it. I was surprised the water was only about 15 feet from the road. The "beach" is RIGHT next to the road. There was a good amount of sand because they had just added some for the race. This beach wasn't busy the weekend I was there. The downtown beach was $7 for adults and parking is $1 an hour downtown. A bit too pricey for what we wanted. I read a couple reviews of how busy and horrible this race weekend was. I didn't find this to be true. The ranger told us about the race as we checked in. (actually a 5k/10k took place on Saturday as well as the tri on Sunday ) I was surprised to discover 1200 athletes would be competing on Sunday and a good number of them camp there on Saturday night. Their presence didn't really disrupt anything for me. In fact, I really liked watching them all run by and cheered them on while I ate my breakfast. The race started at 7am and I woke up that day because of the spectators walking/talking on the road as they went to the start line around 6:30ish. We didn't attempt to leave the camp until 1pm due to what we read on-line and this was perfect for us to have a lazy Sunday. We also ate at Corleone's restaurant (half block from camp entrance). I enjoyed my sandwich and would eat there again. Nice to have a restaurant to walk to if we had bad weather and couldn't cook our food. We were at a site where we didn't park our car on the site. We parked in one of the mini lots and it was only 30 feet from our site. I didn't see any sites at this camp where parking and carrying in your items would be a bit nuisance. Good size playground for kids on the other side of the wooded area (5-10 min walk). 15 min walk to the "beach" from the tent area. Didn't see many sites which had trees for clothes lines or to hang a hammock. :(
So, you pull into a fenced-in park, go down the street to park, drag all your stuff to a very small, crowded on weekends "State Park" area overlooking a creek, the main street and the only free "beach" on Geneva Lake. The "beach" is pathetic. The width is about 6' by about 75 yards. Good luck.
lots of campers - not well policed or taken care of. situated at east end of Lake Geneva with a very small beach access to the Lake.
The beach is VERY VERY tiny. Therefore, if its around noon, it's difficult to even find a spot to lay down a towel. The water is murky and there are insects all along the beach. There is a beautiful view of the lake, but that is the only pro of this place. My advice: skip it and go to another beach!
Very nice beach that runs along the Lake Shore path. Comes in very handy, esp. having to use the restroom facilities!
