This is well worth the stop if you are in the area and want to see some beautiful artwork or hike a little bit. The gallery is really two in one, one that rotates through various artists and then of course the Ned Smith gallery. They do also rotate his work as well. For $7, you get entrance into both, and know that your money goes to a good cause. While the galleries are not huge, there are certainly some beautiful pieces. Ned's work is amazing, anyone who likes wildlife art will thoroughly enjoy browsing through. There are even some of the prints available in the gift shop. We also took a two and a half hour hike around the grounds, weaving among the various trails and up to the top of the mountain, where there are beautiful views looking down. But the nice thing is there are several trails of varying degrees of difficulty, so you can hike as little or as much as you want and to what degree you want to. We had a great time and would definitely go back.
A beautiful facility that showcases wildlife artist Ned Smith's work (best known for his art on the covers of "Game News"... The Pennsylvania Game Commissions Magazine). The Olewine Gallery also has some great pieces of art on a rotating exhibit (the current exhibit of Dan Christ {another talented artist} has great pieces of art that you were even able to purchase if you fell in love with something) Gift shop has some Ned Smith and other art prints and some great local artisan wares, books and resource material. Prices were very reasonable. The staff and volunteers were very informative and welcoming. The grounds and surroundings are spectacular. There is an nominal admission charge (reduced rates for students and senior citizens). Highly recommend a trip to the Ned Smith Center!
My artist husband and I took in the Nature Center in early August. We always enjoyed Ned Smith's artwork on the cover of PA Game News, so I was glad to find this little place. Nice gift shop with lots of locally made items, two galleries for the great price of $7 per person. We could tell that the woman who works there (we were there on a Sunday) REALLY loves her job! The Smith gallery also had local young artists' works on display, which was neat to see. We weren't dressed for actual trail walking, so we just walked around the gardens right out front, but I'll bet the trails are great. Biking trails are available. We really enjoyed the quiet of the area with just birdsong and bees' buzzing for sound. Oh, and the restroom was quite clean, always a bonus!
This place has wonderful network of trails, great Art and Nature exhibits, a gorgeous building and bridge over the creek. One of the best, and most accessible, trail networks around. Stroll the flat 'rail trail' style portion, or hike up the mountain, or simply wander around and see which view of the lovely creek you like best.
We found this great place east of Millersburg, in central PA, a few months ago and forgot that we had contacted Trip Advisor to include it as an attraction. This is a wonderful place to visit and spend time. There is a modern visitors center, an art gallery (small entrance fee),, an inviting covered deck, a number of interesting trails to walk and much information on the wildlike in the area. There are walks, lectures, activities, festivals, camps. It is named for Ned Smith, a well known painter of wildlife, who died a few years ago. Some of his work is on display. A great place to spend a few hours.
I love this place! An amazing setting for a nature themed art gallery. The exhibits are always great, plus they have evenings of music on the porch, various workshops, guided bird walks, and much more! The native plant sale is a great chance to talk with Master Gardeners about your garden and buy plants indigenous to the region. Native plants will do so much better in your garden! If you love walks at a leisurely pace, hiking or biking, be sure to spend time here. You can enjoy the acres of land at no cost. Yes, FREE. There is a small charge to get into the gallery and for some of the shows and workshops, but the fee is always reasonable. If you become a member, which I highly suggest, many of the fees for workshops, etc. are waived. Recently my husband and I attended Sundays in the Gallery: Evenings of Celebration & Song. The price was $15, which included wine, cheese, crackers, fruit and sweets, not to mention fabulous talent singing great American standards like At Last, Ain't Misbehaving and much more. A couple of hours of entertainment, plus snacks and wine for that price? It was a steal and a thoroughly enjoyable evening! Spending time at the Ned Smith Center will lighten your heart and soul!
