The Capitol is a great place to visit, especially through a guided tour! The architecture, construction, and history of the building is incredible, and really any visitor to Lansing should appreciate what the Capitol has to offer (all politics aside). From the lower level, to the rotunda, to the chambers, to the governor's office....all fantastic places to see and experience.
Even though I am not a Michigander, the docent tour was very interesting from a U. S. History perspective. I had some time after a business meeting and am glad I took a Local's recommendation. The architecture is very interesting also. I think it is only open during the week, and some areas get closed based on what is going on, so check with the visitor center before you go.
It was really good. Unfortunately some access were closed but I managed to see most of the palces...the supreme court...It is something you have to visit if you come to Lansing, it's free and you learn a lot about history if you take a tour guide.
I love our state capitol building. Granted it is a historical piece of work. However due to the fact that there is not access to it on weekends, why should visitor come to Lansing for attractions. It should be open for visitors 7 days a week except National and state holidays.
Beautiful historic interior. Informative tours. Every room is special bur the rotunda is the best by far. Amazing piece of work.
Traffic with the locals can be a little tricky with rude college drivers or business moguls being pushy pants otherwise alright as long as you have your gps on you. google maps is a must in this city.
I'm not sure if docent-lead tours are available to everyone or just to groups, but our tour was fantastic! Our great guide held the attention of 16 6th - 8th graders while sharing the architecture and history of the building and Michigan. The kids and the adults really enjoyed the hour long tour.
Underutilized jewel of the city... What an honor to live in the Capitol City of a state. It never disappoints - every time I visit, I learn/see something different. To date, my best memory has been seeing Anita Baker perform live there!!! I Love Her!!!
I like seeing Capitol buildings they convey the true meaning of democracy to me. This building, as all do, displays great architecture and makes you appreciate our government.
Be sure to take the guided tour. The guide will ask you - elevators or stairs? Michigan State Spartan is the head guide. Surprisingly ornate.
We did the guided tour and really enjoyed it. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the building, it's history and Michigan's government.I would highly recommend going!
The Michigan State Capital is large, ornate, and functional. It is one of the larger capital buildings I have visited. The woodwork, old chandeliers and ceilings are beautiful. If you have time, go with the guide. You will hear a lot more about each room, hall, or stairway you see. The tour guide had interesting stories for children and adults on the tour. Don't miss the paintings of previous governors. One of the displays of Michigan souvenirs chronicles the start of vacations or travel by the general population for enjoyment. It's a simple understandable history lesson about activity that we all take for granted.
The Michigan state capitol is a nice trip, particularly if you like history, politics, or beautiful buildings.
The tour was informative and educational. So many capitol buildings to visit, so little time. The rotunda sound effects was one of the favorites in our group.
Take a tour or tour on your own with self-guided booklet. Interesting facts about the history, art, and architecture.
