Fantastic wines and Heinrich is a true treat!!! If you are in the area or just want to experience great dry missouri wines you must stop by this winery. It truly is a gem.
Fantastic wines! I you prefer drier wines, this is the place for you. Not fancy, just simple wine and great conversation with Heinrich and Gina. We're regulars for tastings and their two festivals in June and September, complete with authentic German knockwurst and home made bread baked in their adobe oven!
We used to frequent this winery when we were in college at UMR. Back then, we loved tasting this man's wonderful masterpieces and visiting and learning about wine from him. We recently went back and were so excited to see Heinrich again! His wines are beyond ordinary, better than the ones we had in California! This man knows his wines and grapes and is happy to share his knowledge. He encourages you to try wines that you are not sure you like only to find out you do like his. My friend that was with us and only likes sweet wines, was liking all of his wines.....even the dry ones! Once we tried them all, we bought several cases and proceeded to enjoy a bottle along with cheese and crackers on the patio area. Heinrich joined us and we thoroughly enjoyed his company and his stories! It was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon. We stayed for over 2 1/2 hours. This place is a real gem. It may be off the beaten path, but is well worth the trip!
This little winery packs a huge punch! Set out of the beaten path, this St James winery boasts some of the best wines I've ever tasted. But, there is a surprise. The owner of this winery, Heinrich himself, is the best part of the experience. Full of humor and knowledge, this sweet gentleman presents his wine like a great professor would introduce a wonderful new project to his students. He is very proud (rightfully so) of his wines and his enthusiasm had me trying wines I never would have before. His Traminette was cold, crisp and delicious and the reds...I don't have words to describe! Find this little gem for yourself, grab a case or two, you will not be dissapointed!
Great man and he makes wonderful wines. So by for a friendly visit, great discussions, superb wines. Grab a case or two you won't be disappointed.
And hopefully it won't be a once in a life time trip for you. Since I found it, heard about it from Sibyl's, I visit several times a year and am disappointed when Heinrich isn't there. He is the one that encouraged me to give dry wine another try and I have never looked back...I am hooked. His Prairie Rouge and Cynthiana are so worth the drive down the long lane to get there. Please do yourself a favor and plan a trip to experience this great winery.
Great atmosphere-actually very noice looking servers took a bit of time to get meal was pretty much crowded
This winery is located in the St. James wine area. This is not a high dollar operation. The owner and his wife have been managing this winery for over 30 years. They alone are worth the trip to listen to them. It's not often you can walk into a winery face to face with the owner and have them tell you all about their wines, how it's made... say high to the Lone Ranger while there.
Hard to find (use gps), great reward. Heinrich is a stockpile of knowledge about MO. grapes. Ask him about the difference between Cynthiana and Norton grapes. There is little asthetic appeal to the place, but that is not what it is about. It is about listening to the knowledge and wisdom of a very, very, interesting man. He is upwards in age, but still works his tail off. He will be gone someday and that will be a great loss to the area. There is one picnic table outside if you want to bring some food and hang out a bit. (do it on a day when it is below 85). He and Three Squirrels Winery promote each other and both are must stops if in the st. james area. Call ahead for hours of operation.
This winery is a little hard to find but worth the effort. A small, cozy tasting room and an excellent host. This is a one man operation with some of the tastiest wine in the area. The outside patio is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the forest view.
You have to hunt to find this place. It's owned by an old world German and his wife who do all of the wine making process themselves. The wine is by far my favorite in Missouri. Don't expect a fancy winery and there is cat that will greet you as well. If you want an authentic wine experience, this is it.
We were looking for a winery off the beaten path, and this fit the bill. We sampled the delightful wines, chose a bottle, and enjoyed a picnic lunch under the trees. Thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon!
A few hour or so spent with Heinrich gives you a taste of the Old World wine making experience. Heinrich is not only knowledgeable about wine making he also is in the know about the history of Missouri vineyards. Very good wines at a reasonable price. An authentic experience, not a commercial faux winery. Highly recommended.
